Complete theatre guide to the American Airlines Theatre

Last Updated:

Located at 227 West 42nd Street, the American Airlines theatre is a historic, Italian Renaissance style Broadway theatre. The American Airlines was built by the Selwyn brothers, Edgar and Archie, in 1918, and was originally named after them. After years of neglect, the theatre was restored to its former glory and reopened as the American Airlines on June 30, 2000 in honor of its major sponsor. Presently, it houses the Roundabout’s major dramatic shows. Handy Tips

  • Please turn off all electronic devices when entering the American Airlines theatre.
  • Photography and recording devices of any kind inside the theatre are strictly prohibited by law.
  • The theatre is air conditioned. Please dress appropriately or bring along a coat or a jacket if it’s warm outside.
  • Avoid the last three orchestra rows (N, O, and P) and the extreme corner seats of both the orchestra and mezzanine since the view from there isn’t all that great.
  • The mezzanine overhangs the orchestra from row H. Do keep that in mind while you book your tickets online.
  • There are a lot of restaurants and hotels that have tied up with the theatre to offer you great discounts and deals. Check with the staff if you are interested in staying/eating near the theatre.
  • If you’re interested in booking the box seats, please note that you will have a limited view of the extreme side of the stage and will probably miss a few entrance and exit bits. While it won’t impact your enjoyment of the show in any way, it’s something to be aware of.
  • There is no center aisle in the mezzanine; just long rows of seats that you enter at one end or the other. So if you have a seat near either end, be prepared to get up and down a lot as people squeeze by you to get to the seats closer to the middle.
