Ian McKellen to play Falstaff in Player Kings at West End 2024

The stage and screen legend, Ian McKellen is set to take on the role of Shakespeare's Falstaff in the 2024 West End adaptation of Player Kings.

Making a Shakespearean comeback, Ian McKellen now joins Player Kings, which is a new stage adaptation of Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2. Robert Icke will both adapt and direct McKellen, who will portray John Falstaff in the production, scheduled to hit West End's Noel Coward Theatre in spring 2024.


The cast and creatives

This production of Player Kings intertwines the narratives of two significant Shakespearean history plays, portraying a tumultuous period in a fractured England. As Prince Hal grapples with the challenges of becoming king, the question arises: must he forsake his companions, including the revelry-loving Falstaff?

With Robert Icke adapting and directing, Ian McKellen is joining Player Kings as Flastaff. The play boasts a creative team that includes Hildegard Bechtler for set design, Lee Curran for lighting design, Gareth Fry for sound design, Julia Horan for casting, and Kev McCurdy for fight direction.
