Written by Olivier and Academy Award-winning writer, Martin McDonagh, Hangmen is a delightfully real exploration of humanity’s deep-rooted desire for violence and revenge. When England abolishes death by hanging, a key executioner undergoes a life crisis. The dark comedy first premiered on West End in 2015 and won critical acclaim for its resounding human themes and gripping storytelling.

In 2018, Hangmen came to Off-Broadway with several original cast members and won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. In 2020, Hangmen will finally make its much-anticipated debut on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre.

Hangmen: About The Show

The brainchild of acclaimed writer Martin McDonagh, Hangmen is set in 1965 England. It follows the aftermath of when death by hanging is abolished in the UK and the subsequent impact on an executioner’s life. Hangmen offers a sharp, humourous and often unflinchingly dark look at human ambition, making for a riveting viewing experience.
The 2020 adaptation of the new-age classic has been directed by Olivier Award nominee Mathew Dunster who also directed the West End production in 2016. Joining him behind the scene is costume designer, Anna Fleischle, and sound designer, Ian Dickinson.
The on-stage talent rivals the backstage one with Mark Addy from Game of Thrones leading the cast. Joining him on stage are Dan Stevens from Beauty and the Beast, Tracie Bennett from End of the Rainbow and Ewen Bremner from Trainspotting. The show will run on a limited engagement with previews beginning from 28 Feb 2020. Opening night is set for 19 March 2020 while the show closes on 18 July 2020.

Hangmen: The Story

The year is 1965, in Oldham, England. Hangmen follows the tragic tale of Harry Wade, locally dubbed as the second-best executioner in town. This crowd-sourced title plagues Harry with venomous professional jealousy and a heightened sense of self-importance. To make ends meet, he also owns a pub in the town with his wife, Alice, and daughter, Shirley.
Harry's life takes a dramatic turn when capital punishment is banned in England. The sudden turn of events leads strangers to Harry's pub with questions about his old life. Things take a turn for the worse when Mooney, a visitor, begins to regularly frequent the pub to provoke Harry and flirt with his daughter. What follows is the hangman’s dilemma as he decides what must be done with the immoral stranger.

Hangmen Reviews

These reviews are based on the Off-Broadway production of Hangmen. Once the show premiers on Broadway, reviews will be updated.

“A huge hit in London, this Royal Court production of the black farce “Hangmen” makes a smooth transition to the Atlantic Theater with a largely American cast well-coached (by Stephen Gabis) in the dulcet dialect spoken in the rugged north of England. Under the fastidious direction of Matthew Dunster, the ensemble work is slickly well-oiled in the best tradition of barroom plays.”
- Variety, 2018 Off-Broadway production.

"For a writer of Mr. McDonagh’s scalpel-edged gifts, these unadmirable qualities are joyous opportunities, allowing for the sort of conversation in which stupidity and pettiness achieve the sparkle of wit. “Hangmen” is often very funny. But as you laugh, you may feel the walls of Anna Fleischle’s clammy pub set closing in on you.”
- The New York Times, 2018 Off-Broadway production.
