Spinning Violetta’s story into a vibrant storyline, the iconic opera will treat you to one of the world’s greatest outdoor theatrical experiences with a series of majestic performances, lavish sets, and exhilarating fireworks against an oceanic backdrop. Join Brian Castles-Onion as he conducts the Opera with his award-winning orchestra team for a performance on a rousing, heartbreaking night of duets.

The Story

A story of star-crossed lovers set in Paris, La Traviata delves into the life of a beautiful courtesan Violetta, whose restless life keeps taking a toll on her. However, things begin to change the minute Alfredo, a handsome, bourgeois man, proposes a toast for her. Touched by his gesture, Violetta begins to believe in love again.

The heart-warming, yet tragic love story talks about issues of class divide, as Violetta is advised to keep away from Alfredo for the sake of his reputation. Left with no choice, the lovers separate, only to find a series of twisted events following them onto the last fateful day. Will Violetta and Alfredo reunite? Will a love as fateful as theirs find accomplishment?

Performance

A masterpiece by Giuseppe Verdi, La Traviata was first performed on March 6, 1853, at La Fenice Opera House in Venice. Still considered as Verdi’s most popular opera, the performance was praised for bringing out social issues and was deemed to be ahead of its time ever since its premiere. Today, La Traviata carries its legacy of being the most performed opera ever since 1856. Watch 70 performers get together on Sydney Harbour and party boats, with a glimmering 3.5 tonne chandelier adorning the set.

Awards

Amongst other nominations, La Traviata has been currently nominated for the Opera Awards 2019.

Critic Reviews

“Since making his Met debut in 2009, Mr. Nézet-Séguin has proved his excellence in nearly 70 performances. I expected his “Traviata” to be good, but not this good.”
NY Times

“The Royal Opera House orchestra blazes and caresses: agitated string attacks on the “three cards” motif; ferocious pizzicatos; woodwind curdling, yowling, seducing; brass sour and menacing. How could anyone not want to witness such terrific music-making?"
The Guardian
