About the Show

Florian Zeller has been hailed by The Guardian as “the most exciting new theatre writer of our time” and rightly so. His previous work ‘The Father’, played at London’s West End in 2015/16 and it was a massive success, garnering multiple awards, including the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award, and cementing his place as one of the best writers of our time. ‘The Height of the Storm’, directed by Jonathan Kent and translated by Christopher Hampton, first opened at the Richmond Theater on the 1st of September, 2018. It then played at the Cambridge Arts Theatre and the Bath Theatre Royal, before being transferred to the Wyndham’s Theatre.

This gripping, heart-wrenching production about the frailty of love, family ties and life, stars perhaps two of the greatest actors of their generation - 2-time Tony Award Winner, Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones, Tomorrow Never Dies) and 3-time Olivier Award Winner, Dame Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park, The Hours, Paddington 2). The two have never performed together on stage prior to this.

The Story

The entire play mainly focuses on André (Jonathan Pryce) and Madeleine (Dame Eileen Atkins), a couple who have been married for over 50 years. This weekend, the couple are patiently waiting for the arrival of their daughter, however, when she does arrive, things do not go as planned. A bunch of flowers arrive at their doorstep but no one seems to know who sent them. A strange woman from the past suddenly turns up. Who is she? And for some reason, why does André feel like he isn’t in the room at all? Reality and illusion, memory and thoughts, everything seems to overlap. What is real and what is not? This imaginative piece of theatre tackles all these questions beautifully and the end result is memorable, strong and powerful.

Reviews

“The beauty of Zeller’s play lies in its slipperiness and ambiguity. Nothing is solid. Time is cruel and memory is fragile. Sometimes it seems as if Madeleine is not there at all, as if she exists only in Andre’s mind; at other times it’s like she just popped out to tend the vegetable garden and it’s he who is the ghost in his own home.”
The Stage

“Everything is fluid but there is nothing vague or dreamy about either Kent’s production or Hampton’s translation, which meticulously chart the intimacies and tensions of family life.”
