About the Show

Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) play London by Jane Austen is one of the most popular novels in English literature, having sold over 20 million copies across the world. Pride and Prejudice playing at the Criterion Theater is an adaptation unlike any other, which pairs Austen’s witty remarks and some hilarious tunes. The adaptation also features an irresistible soundtrack that includes hits by Candi Staton and Carly Simon.

Featuring an all-female cast, the production is based on the book by Isobel McArthur, who also stars in the lead roles of Darcy and Mrs Bennet. The production sees significant changes to the original, owing to the 200 years of recent history since the release of the novel. Produced by David Pugh, an Olivier and Tony award-winning producer the production promises to be an audacious and unique retelling of Austen’s classic.

The Story

Mr Bennet has five daughters. He is looking to pass down his estate, but can only do so to a male heir. He plans to marry one of his daughters to a wealthy family, in order to ensure that his other daughters are not destitute upon his death.

The story delves into the importance of marrying for love, rather than social privilege and money, despite the societal pressure.

Pride and Prejudice*(*sort of) Play London | Reviews West End London

“Isobel McArthur’s adaptation merrily conflates 200 years of romantic-pop history and presents the Bennet sisters singing karaoke covers of Will You Love Me Tomorrow and I Got You Babe while standing on a beer crate in the middle of a regency ball. Naturally, You’re So Vain is addressed to the brooding Mr Darcy.”
