Bess Wohl’s Make Believe set to storm Off-Broadway!

The latest production of Make Believe Off-Broadway will be on-stage until September 22, after a one-week extension at the Tony Kiser Theatre.

Second Stage Theatre has brought to Bess Wohl’s Make Believe to the Off-Broadway scene. Directed by the incredibly talented Michael Greif who brought the likes of Dear Evan Hansen and War Paint to life, Make Believe has already made quite a splash in the theatre scene. The plot, although recognizable, has captured the imagination of many. In Make Believe, four kids under the age of 10 years disappear while playing a game. Their search continues 32 years later. The show stars Kim Fischer (of Then She Fell, Mrs. Fletcher), Susannah Flood (of The Cherry Orchard, Plano), Ryan Foust (of Mary Page Marlowe), Brad Heberlee (of Mrs. Murray’s Menagerie, A Life), and Samantha Mathis (of Being Frank, Nomad Motel) alongside debutantes Harrison Fox, Casey Hilton, and Maren Heary.

Make Believe tantalizes the imaginative side of the viewer by bringing back the retrospective plot. Bess Wohl presents this age-old dramatic technique with a twist, as the older version of the characters dig up secrets and exposes it to the viewers. Another creative move employed by Greif is casting actual kids to play the characters. This is a risk and could have been catastrophic but the talented cast pulls off the drama without any fuss. The themes of loss and grief blur the line between childhood and adulthood while lending a much-needed intensity to the production. The use of set design and music in order to drive home the difference in time is also poignant and sublime. The production has been received well in the critical circuit. Make Believe is partly funded by a grant from the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

Second Stage Theatre is bringing Bess Wohl into the fold again after the successful stint of American Hero. Make Believe has been called a comedy, a drama, a tragedy, and a triumph, all at once. The show is 80-minutes long with no intermission.
