Best Time to Visit Deserts in Sharjah

The best time of year to visit the deserts of Sharjah is from mid-October to mid-April. This is during the region's cooler months, when daytime temperatures average between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius. Although it can still be quite hot during noon, the cooler weather in the evening makes it more bearable to explore the desert.

From November to January, the weather in the desert can be quite chilly at night, about 7 to 10 degrees Celsius (at least 10 degrees lesser than the city temperatures), so make sure to be prepared for the weather.

Which Deserts Should you Visit in Sharjah?

1Al Badayer

Sharjah Desert

With endless dunes, this spot is known to have the most untroubled dunes that can be tackled by both rookies and professionals alike. It is known as the 'Big Red' due to its terracotta red colour. The location is very popular among 4x4 enthusiasts. Stretching from Sharjah to Dubai, the desert is located on the way to the Hatta Oman Road, making it easily accessible. If adventure does not fancy you, you can watch the sunset over the red sands or stargaze while camping overnight!

Perfect For
Quad Biking, Dune Bashing, Camping
Travel Time (from Sharjah)
1 hour

2Al Dhaid

Located on the outskirts of Sharjah, Al Dhaid Desert is located in the oasis town of Al Dhaid. The town is known for its extensive palm plantations and many other fruits grown. The plants are irrigated from the freshwater from Mount Hajar via an ancient tunnel system, known as 'Aflaj'. Visitors can try the fresh limes, guava, and mangoes grown in plenty here.

During the winter, the desert hosts camel races, on most Thursdays and Fridays early in the morning. Visitors can buy local pottery, carpets, and more from the local markets on Fridays.

Perfect For
Shopping, Farm/Plantation Visits
Travel Time (from Sharjah)
35 minutes

3Al Mleiha Desert

Sharjah Desert

Located towards Kalba, the Mleiha desert is located next to the Jebel Maleihah or the 'Fossil Rock'. The UNESCO nominated world heritage site houses the Mleiha Archeological center, from where they search and study ancient artifacts found in the region. Many tools, utensils, and skeletons of camels were found here. Locals often come here with quad bikes and dune buggies, which the visitors must surely try! You can also trek the Camel Rock (which is over 80 million years old), from where you can get a beautiful view of the stunning desert!

Perfect For
Off-roading, Photography, Archaeology
Travel Time (from Sharjah)
45 minutes

4Al Madam

Sharjah Desert

Once inhabited by the Al Kutbi tribe, one of the three prominent tribes of Al Madam, the area is now abandoned. The rumours say that people were driven out of their homes by evil spirits or djinns. A green mosque lies in the desert, perfectly build, yet half buried under sands giving a creepy vibe enough to irk you. There are also rows of blue and red houses buried halfway in the sands, reminiscent of the people who lived there. However, the spot is pretty popular among the locals for dune-bashing in 4x4s. The town also houses many archaeological sites. Al Madam is worth a try if you want to get a glimpse of what it's like to be an Arabian Ghost Buster (or not?).

Perfect For
Archaeology, Dune-Bashing, Ghost Town
Travel Time (from Sharjah)
1.5 hours

What to Wear When Visiting Deserts in Sharjah?

When visiting any desert, it is important to dress appropriately to protect yourself from the harsh environment.

  • The best clothing to wear in a desert is loose, light-colored, and made from natural fabrics such as cotton.
  • Long sleeves and pants will help to protect your skin from the sun, while a wide-brimmed hat will keep your head cool and prevent sunburn.
  • Avoid free-flowing clothes, especially while doing adventure sports to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
  • It is also important to wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from hot sand and sharp rocks.
  • Finally, be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen to keep yourself hydrated and prevent sun damage.

By following these simple guidelines, you can make sure that you stay safe and comfortable during your desert adventure.
