Museum Of The Future: The Exteriors

The Design and Architecture of the Museum of the Future

The design of the building is definitely one of the world’s most complex structures. Designed by local architecture firm, Killa Design, who won the competition in 2015, it has been created using high-tech machinery such as a computer-controlled tool to cut nearly 1000 moulds to support the outer structure.

The inspiration for the torus form is inspired by “Feng Shui,” where the building’s shape represents the earth and the sky and the empty space in the middle represents the unknown. Arabic calligraphy runs through the outer facade of the building and the smooth exteriors are a borrowed technique from the aviation industry, covered in 890 joint-free stainless steel and fibreglass panels. In fact, the calligraphy inscribed onto the exterior features quotes from the Prime Minister of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The only horizontal surfaces in the building are the floors.

What Does the Arabic Calligraphy Say?

The exteriors of the Museum of the Future are inscribed with beautiful Arabic calligraphy. Rendered in the calligraphy of Mattar Bin Lahej, the building is the enveloped by 3 quotes from His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of the UAE.

“The future belongs to those who can imagine, design, and execute it,” “We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity can leave a legacy long after we are gone,” and most importantly, “The future does not wait. The future can be designed and built today.”

These quotes are meant to inspire us to be the change we wish to see in the future and are a reminder that the future is not set in stone, and that it's up to each of us to make it a better place.

The Arabic calligraphy on the exteriors of the building also doubles as the windows of the museum. By day, they cast dappled light throughout the column-free interior; at night, they are illuminated by nearly 4 kilometres of LED lighting.

The Atrium

The Atrium is the first thing the visitors of the museum will see. The bright white space has a warm ambience, lit by natural light that falls into the building through the calligraphy windows. In fact, the calligraphy panels act as windows throughout the buildings, and were constructed using cutting-edge tech. Manufactured entirely by robots, each plate of the now iconic calligraphy is composed of four layers—each layer created through a 16-step process. A space-shuttle simulation will take you up to the rest of the floors!

The Makeshift Space Station

Starting from the fifth floor, you can begin to explore the futuristic museum. The elevator, a makeshift space station, will take you up to the Chapter 1: OSS Hope. One of the appeals of the museum is that it counts on you - as a visitor - to use your imagination and doesn't bear any labels anywhere!

Chapters 1 to 5

  • Chapter 1: OSS Hope - With the 3D walls made of recycled materials, you can enter the station’s command center to find out the missions undertaken by OSS Hope and learn about its discoveries and inventions.
  • Chapter 2: Heal Institute - Geared towards an insight into planet Earth, this chapter lets you walk through a digital Amazon, emphasising on the looming hazards of climate change. It also features a DNA library of 2000+ species that shows the urgency to repair damages caused by climate change.
  • Chapter 3: Al Waha - Or “The Oasis” is where revive your senses. This chapter is all about finding the right balance between reality and virtuality. You are encouraged to leave technology behind and embrace your imagination.
  • Chapter 4: Tomorrow Today - Focuses on leading the planet to a better future- environmentally, culturally, socially, and politically.
  • Chapter 5: Future Heroes - The floor is dedicated to the children, the heroes of the future.

The Robot Barista

Take a glimpse into the technological advancements that are yet to come by paying a visit to the robot barista at the museum to be served a freshly brewed cup of coffee the robot!

Such an Amazing architectural structure! Great outing for those with young kids. The themes I took away from this experience was Outer Space, the Sun, Technology/Robotics, Cool future cars and the Amazon with relation to sustainability of our Environment/Planet. Wasn't sure about the Waha though ? The viewing deck was also a fantastic part of the whole thing. Staff all very helpful and guides very good too ! Loved the coffee robot on the ground floor ! Electronic ticketing with clever digital wristbands dispersing machine also very clever. Perhaps include digital maps around so patrons can explore what's on each floor in between the different parts of the museum. Thank you! Was a good experience overall.
