Plan your spring break with the 10 best places to visit in April

Last Updated:

April is the first month of spring, in many parts of the world. With spring comes warmth and the scent of fresh blooms – cherry blossoms, wildflowers, and tulips! It's a great time to be outdoors, either snorkeling in The Great Barrier Reef of Queensland or watching the sunset over Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level.

As the chill of winter fades, it's a perfect opportunity to pack your bags to help you make the most of this season. Here are ten of the best places to visit in April.

1. Japan

Japan in April

Japan welcomes April with ‘sakura’, or what are commonly known as cherry blossoms, giving way to green foliage and milder temperatures. While every condition is favorable for a trip to Japan in April, make sure you do enough research because many people travel to Japan during the same period to be enchanted by the same cherry blossoms.

Must-visit places in Japan

  • Kyoto: Known as the cultural heart of Japan, the season of spring probably knows this too. As cherry blossoms begin to bloom, the landscape of the city is transformed into beautiful pink and white. Popular spots to view the cherry blossoms are: Maruyama Park (with almost 680 cherry trees), Yodogawa Riverside Park (here’s where the cherry blossom spring festival is held), and Philosopher’s Path (a pedestrian path along Lake Biwa canal, lined by cherry trees).
  • Lake Kawaguchi: An attractive lakeside, Lake Kawaguchi lies just outside of Japan, near Mount Fuji. In the month of April, the lake is ringed with cherry trees in full bloom. On a clear day (as can be expected during spring), you can see a perfect mirror image of Mount Fuji reflected on the lake. An extraordinary sight to experience!
  • Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: Interestingly, April is not all about cherry blossoms in Japan – it also brings the opening of popular mountainous locations which are closed in winter. Open between April 15 - November 30, 2024, this scenic route passes through the Northern Japan Alps and forms a majestic snow corridor (in the upper sections) with snow walls reaching up to 20 meters high. A section of the snow corridor, around Murodo, is open to pedestrians from April 15 to June 25, 2024.

2. Italy

Naples, Italy in April

April in Italy heralds the arrival of spring season, with pleasant temperatures and blooming landscapes. Oddly though, this is shoulder season in Italy, giving you all the more reason to visit — lesser crowds and cheaper accommodations (especially in Southern Italy – Naples, Bari, and Taranto to name a few). Make the most of your visit wandering through ancient ruins, admiring pieces of Renaissance art, and indulging in wine and cheese!

Must-visit places in Italy

  • Rome: Awakening from the cold winter season, Rome brings with it warmth and tourists! Visit the iconic landmarks - Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City. The city also hosts a bunch of festivals during April – its birthday, its liberation day and Easter! Join in on the festivities, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, and savor traditional Roman dishes in trattorias.
  • Naples: By the mediterranean sea, lies the quaint, not-so-little (it is third largest city in Rome) city of Naples. April is shoulder season in Naples, which means you can enjoy the pleasant weather WITHOUT being jostled around by other tourists. Pack your bags and go island hopping from Capri to Palmarola, dress up as your favorite character and attend Comic Con between April 25-28, 2024, and indulge your taste buds in some authentic Neapolitan pizza and coffee!
  • Florence: Be warned – the weather in Florence can vary, not through the month but on any given day. But hey, it’s spring and the city is blanketed in flowers – wisterias in full bloom. Since the weather is (mostly) balmy, I highly recommend that you do more outdoor activities while here – day trips, Tuscan wine tours, garden strolls through Boboli Gardens and the likes. While here, don’t miss out on the iconic landmarks that decorate the landscape of Florence – the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, Siena Cathedral, and Palazzo Pitti .

3. Australia

Great Barrier Reef in Australia

The Land Down Under is in the peak of its autumn season in April, which means cooler weather and shorter days. But since Australia is a large country, weather varies across the country – the northern parts (Darwin & Townsville) are hot, the southern parts (Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart) are mild. The point is to carry an umbrella, pack for cold nights, and just have fun! Swim in the sea in the North, check out museums and galleries in the major cities of Sydney & Melbourne, go hiking in the Blue Mountains on the west, and tour the wineries in the south.

Must-visit places in Australia

  • Barossa Valley: Head South to the wineries in Barossa Valley. The weather in April aids the production of some of the best up-and-coming wines in the world. While here, attend the biennial Barossa Vintage Festival, a nine-day celebration featuring parades, food, live music and, of course, wine. And what compliments good wine? Good food – sample delicate cheeses and break open a fresh bread roll.
  • The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland: Dive into one of the seven wonders of the world – The Great Barrier Reef. Home to the world’s largest collection of coral reefs (400 types of coral), 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc, this is a bucket-list visit for most people. Book a helicopter ride over the reef, or go on boat cruise closer to it, go snorkeling or scuba diving to see the reef up close, or if you choose to simply lounge on the sandy white beach, head to Whitehaven Beach.
  • Sydney: Australia’s iconic harbor city Sydney has so much to offer, for every type of traveler. Catch a play at the Sydney Opera House, book a lunch cruise for two (or how many ever) on a Sydney Harbor Cruise, make a day trip to the Taronga Zoo which is home to over 5,000 animals from over 350 species, and cap off your day by stargazing at Jervis Bay, with your toes dug deep into the sand.

4. Spain

Spain in April

Spain in April is a great time to visit but choose the right spots. While the north coast is still cooler, with a chance of rain showers, the southern side promises at least eight hours of sunshine. While history, culture, and landscape is present in every country around the world, what sets Spain apart is the culture of the people. They live and love life, appreciate the present, savor long meals, and the diversity of people brings with it a combination of different traditions, customs and beliefs.

Must-visit places in Spain

  • Seville: During the Semana Santa which ends on March 31, 2024 in Seville, the population of the city multiplies, the main sites in the city are hard to access and accommodation rates go through the roof. So why am I recommending that you travel to Seville in April? You get to witness the extravagance of local celebrations in plenty of sunshine! Throw on a traditional flamenco dress and join a dance class to be ready for Seville’s iconic fair Feria de Abril (April 14-20, 2024), dance the night away at the Sevilla Swing Festival, and walk among beautiful orange blossoms (nearly 40,000 of them) lining the winding streets.
  • Granada: April is an ideal time to stroll through the streets of Granada and discover hidden gems and charming hideouts sprinkled across the city. Visit Alhambra palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its moorish architecture and enchanting landscape. Explore the historic Albaicín neighborhood, crawl the tapas bars for free food, shop for rare ceramics at Fajalauza, and end the evening with a flamenco dance performance in a Sacromonte cave.
  • Madrid: Not too hot, not too cold - this is Madrid in April. Since it’s not tourist season yet, you can enjoy the Spanish capital all to yourself (and with a few others like yourself)! Take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Gran Vía or the squares of Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, capture memories under blooming flowers in Retiro Park, visit iconic landmarks such as the Royal Palace and Prado Museum, and most importantly – indulge in jamón ibérico, paella, and churros con chocolate.

5. Thailand

Phuket, Thailand

Thailand in April is warm and dry, in fact, it is one of the warmest months that the country experiences. That said, I’d suggest a beach vacation over a city vacation in Thailand during this time. On April 13, Thailand celebrates Songkran - Thai New Year, which is marked by water fights, street parties, and traditional ceremonies throughout the country.

Must-visit places in Thailand

  • Ko Tao: Part of the Chumphon Archipelago on the western shore of Thailand, Ko Tao is a small island with tons of beautiful viewpoints and plenty of things to do! Popular for its dive schools, if you don’t already know it, learn diving here. Explore the beaches of Sairee and Chalok Baan Kao Bay, look upon incredible vistas from viewpoints such as John Suwan Viewpoint and Sun Suwan 360 View, and go diving with whale sharks because it's whaleshark season between late March and early June.
Tip: Ko Tao is only accessible by boat.
  • Phuket: Visiting Phuket in April is a gamble because the weather is characterized by occasional showers and thunderstorms, the sun is still out. Revel in the festive celebrations of Songkran Water Festival, go surfing on Kata Beach, visit the Phuket Bird Park (houses about 1,000 birds of more than 100 species), take a day trip to Phi Phi Islands, and take a Thai cooking class to learn about the local ingredients and cooking skills.
  • Chiang Mai: From busy markets and street food in the old city to relaxing Thai massages, Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of Northern Thailand. Visit the Elephant Park, a rescue center for elephants that have been abused by the tourism industry over the years, explore ‘wats’ (Buddhist temples) and attend a monk chat where you can talk to the monks about Buddhism, life in the temples, or just about anything else that you’d like to. While not exactly Chaing Mai, I’d highly recommend you rent a scooter and ride the (four-day) Mae Hong Son Loop, known to be one of the best motorbike loops in Southeast Asia.

6. Netherlands

Tulip season in Amsterdam

April is the season of spring in the Netherlands and is definitely one of the best times to visit. As the tulips begin to bloom, the tourists begin to come in. • Keukenhof Gardens: Known as the ‘Garden of Europe’, Keukenhof Gardens showcases millions of tulips, daffodils, and other spring flowers in full bloom. While here, attend Bloemencorso Bollenstreek (April 20-21, 2024), one of the world’s most famous flower parades.

7. Peru

Machu Pichu in Peru

As the season shifts from wet to dry, Peru in April is shoulder season. Landscapes are green, rainfalls are scarce, and orchids sprout from every crevice in the jungles and mountains. There’s a popular claim in Peru which says there are over 3,000 traditional Peruvian festivals celebrated throughout the year and April celebrates El Señor de los Temblores or the Lord of the Earthquakes, and on each Easter Monday at 7 PM, the statue of Jesus is removed from Cusco’s cathedral and paraded throughout the city.

Must-visit places in Peru

  • Machu Picchu: The ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a dream destination for many people. To hike up to this sacred valley, which sits high up in the Andes at an altitude of 7,972 feet, there are multiple routes including the classic Salkantay Trek (for the nature enthusiasts), the Lares Trek, and Huchuy Cusco Trek (for beginners and history buffs). That said, your trip needn’t end just at Machu Picchu. Surrounding it are many peaks which offer treks of varying challenge levels.

Explore Ausangate National Park known for its seven colored lakes that vary from bright red to deep blue and beyond, the temple of Qorikancha, and witness the stunning Moray Ruins.

Visit The Uros floating islands, plan a half day trip to Taquile Island, and watch the sunset on Isla de Sol or from Copacabana.

 Morocco in April

If you like the sun and lots of it too, Morocco is your go-to destination this April where you can expect an average of nine to ten hours of sunshine. Morocco springs to life during April, with the tourist season slowly kicking in. With warm days and cool nights, Morocco presents ideal weather conditions in April for wind sports, hiking, and kite surfing.
