Why visit Colosseum?

Highlights

Did you know?
  • The Colosseum once had a retractable roof called the ‘velarium’, made of linen and controlled by sailors.
  • The Colosseum's underground tunnels, known as ‘hypogeum’, contained cages for gladiators and animals.
  • Emperor Vespasian financed the Colosseum's construction using the spoils from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.
  • In the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was believed to be a place of martyrdom for early Christians, leading to its preservation. Today, the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession to the amphitheater on Good Friday.
  • Though largely ruined, the Colosseum's original marble facade was once adorned with bronze statues and colorful frescoes.

The whole tour was insightful and eye opening thanks to our excellent guide, Daniel V, who really brought the ruins of the forum and the colesseum to life. Daniel is an excellent host and his enthusiasm for all things Rome really shone through. Communication was excellent before hand and everything went to plan on the day. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking of booking a tour as you get so much more than trying to navigate the vast areas alone and read the information boards. Spend a few more euros, it's really worth it!

Our guide, Lumi, was fantastic! Her sense of humor made what could have been a very dull, encyclopedic recitation of facts into a lively and engaging conversation. As we went through each location, she told us facts, jokes, and kept an eye out for the kids to make sure they didn't get bored or hurt. She found better places to queue or stop that weren't overcrowded and used her insights and relationships to help when things would slow us down. We couldn't have asked for a better guide. We do think it's important to note that you must have a form of photo ID on these tours and HeadOut does not notify you of this. Because we've been on these before, we brought our passports just in case, but another family had to jump through some hoops as they were not prepared.

PRO: It's been a lifelong dream to see the Forum and the Colosseum, and I got to do that. The guide was very knowledgable about the subject. CON: The weather was terrible - constant, heavy rain. I love taking photographs but the light was so poor it was difficult to get the shots I wanted. Of course, this wasn't your fault - it just means I will have to come back! CON: I have a bad back and don't walk too well. Three times the party sped off and left me behind - at the entrance to the Forum, at a chapel inside the site, and on the way down to the Colosseum. Having the radio commentary was good because if I could hear the guide I knew they were't too far away. PRO: After the third time the guide took more care to look for me and once the tour was ended he got me a ride on the elevator which I don't think was incuded in our ticket. PRO: radio commentary.
