All about Rome City Cards

The Rome City Card is an all-in-one sightseeing pass that bundles entry to major attractions, public transport, and sometimes tours into a single product for ease of use. Available as both day-based (48–72 hours or multi-day) and attraction-based options, it offers flexibility to match how intensively you want to sightsee while delivering savings versus separate tickets when you plan well. Typical Rome sightseeing pass inclusions cover headline sites such as the Colosseum with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Borghese Gallery. Depending on the card, you can also get unlimited metro/bus travel. Whether you prefer a packed schedule or a slower pace, there is a Rome City Card variant to suit you.

How do Rome City Cards work

Visitors walking through the Roman Forum ruins in Rome.

Save on Rome’s headline sights in one bundle

Rome sightseeing cards group multiple tickets into a single purchase, so you often pay less than buying each entry separately. Use a Roma Pass day to combine the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Capitoline Museums, or a Rome Tourist Card for the Colosseum and Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. The more major attractions you actually visit within the validity, the stronger your overall savings.

One pass for many attractions and public transport

Most cards act as your ticket at participating sites and, in some cases, your metro/bus pass. For example, Roma Pass includes unlimited travel on Rome ATAC buses and metro, ideal for hopping between the Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo, and outlying museums. You simply tap or show the pass at turnstiles and museum entrances, avoiding separate transport tickets and repeated payment queues during your stay.

Flexible formats to match your travel style

You choose between time-based cards and flexible “pick‑and‑mix” passes. A 72‑hour Roma Pass or the Omnia Card suits intensive 2–3 day sightseeing, while the Go City Rome Explorer Pass lets you spread 2–7 attractions—such as the Vatican Museums, Borghese Gallery, or a catacombs tour—over up to 30 days. This makes it easier to adapt the pass to either a fast-paced or relaxed itinerary.

Skip ticket lines with advance reservations

City cards typically let you bypass on-site ticket offices, but you still must pre-book time slots for high-demand places like the Colosseum and Vatican Museums. At the entrance, you join the reserved line, show your pass or voucher, and only queue for mandatory security checks.

Day-based Rome City Cards

These Rome sightseeing passes are valid for a set number of consecutive days and typically include entry to multiple attractions plus unlimited public transport. Ideal for first-time visitors planning intensive 2–5 day sightseeing, they offer convenience by bundling tickets and transit into one purchase.

Recommended tours:

Interior view of Rome Pantheon with columns and visitors exploring the historic site.

Attraction-based Rome City Cards

Attraction-based Rome city passes let you choose a fixed number of sights from a larger list (usually 2–7) and use them over several days. Best for relaxed travelers or repeat visitors who want specific highlights at their own pace while keeping costs predictable.

Recommended tours:

Tram passing by historic building in Rome, Italy.

Public transport + sightseeing cards

If Rome public transport coverage is available, these products focus on unlimited metro, bus, and tram travel within Rome, sometimes combined with a few key attractions. They suit budget-conscious visitors staying outside the center who expect to travel frequently each day.

Find the right Rome City Card for your trip

Choose a time-based, all-inclusive Rome attraction pass such as the Roma Pass 72-Hour Pass or the Omnia Card. Both passes gives 2 free entries and discounts at 45+ sites (10+ with Omnia Card) and unlimited Rome ATAC public transport for 72 hours. Pick the Go City Rome Explorer Pass, choosing 2–7 attractions to use over 30 days. You can combine high-value entries like the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, a catacombs tour, or a food experience from a pool of 35–50 options and save up to around 30–40% if you choose the pricier items. Overall, it was a very good choice, especially when I saw the lines for tickets to the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Colosseum. There is room for improvement, particularly when it comes to booking tickets through the partner, Ticketstation. Even though the reservation states that it’s not a physical ticket and you need to find the location where you can claim it, this can cause confusion during the tour to the attractions. The Big-Bus tour was really great and is recommended to be taken as soon as possible after arriving in Rome. It can also be useful in the following days, especially at the end of a day of sightseeing, on the way back to your accommodation.

Easy access once you have the tickets. But make sure you actually receive the PDF tickets. I finally received them after messaging customer service for two hours. You couldn’t activate the Roma Pass using the QR code they showed on the app.

It’s really convenient to be able to use all forms of public transportation so easily. And waiting in line isn’t a problem either. Even when the electronic system at a museum went down, we were still able to get in. Everyone else had to leave. All in all, the pass was a great solution for us.

It was extremely difficult to get the ticket because there were apparently incorrect announcements about where to pick it up. A 40-minute walk, a missed time slot at the Colosseum—really a bummer. Why can’t you get the ticket online? Then I had to make several in-person visits to two offices; the staff were super friendly and super helpful. I would never book this ticket again—it’s too unclear what’s included, too expensive, and too old-fashioned.
