Take a Park Guell guided tour | Pick the one for you!

Last Updated:

Spread over a vast area of 18 hectares, the Park Guell is an example of Gaudi’s take on England’s garden cities. Beautifully crafted by drawing inspiration from nature, this park boasts of beautiful pathways, expansive gardens and intricate sculptures. It is interesting to note that the Park Guell was not originally intended to be a garden. Count Eusebi Guell commissioned Gaudi to develop a miniature city for Barcelona’s affluent class. However, when the project was abandoned midway after the death of the Count, Gaudi decided to turn it into a park. The Park Guell finally opened its gate to the public in 1926 and since then, it has been attracting millions of visitors every year. If you are planning to visit this iconic attraction, here’s why choosing Park Guell guided tours is a good idea.

Park Guell Guided Tour - The Experience

Park Guell

No visit to Barcelona is complete without visiting the expansive Park Guell. At the start of your Park Guell guided tour, your guide will meet you at a pre-decided landmark. He or she will assist you to bypass the long queues (if you opt for a skip-the-line ticket ) and gain entry into the park.

The park is divided into two main sections, the Monumental Zone and the Free Zone. The Free Zone takes up around 90% of the park and as the name suggests, is free. Apart from rich flora and fauna and beautiful winding paths, it also hosts the Gaudi House Museum, where the architect once lived with his family.

While the Monumental Zone covers only about 5% of the total area, it houses most of Gaudi's creations and requires an entrance ticket. Some of the attractions you will come across are:

The Iconic Dragon Stairs

The staircase that leads to the park can be divided into three sections. The first section sports various figurines and sculptures while the second section boasts the symbol of Catalonia. Perhaps the most recognized structure in the park, the dragon, can be found in the third section. Decorated artfully with colourful pieces of mosaic, it also acts as a fountain.

The Greek Theater

At the centre of the Monumental Zone stands the Greek Theatre, which was originally designed to stage open-air shows. It was designed in such a way that these shows could be enjoyed from the surrounding terrace areas. Popularly known as the Nature Square, this structure is a must-visit.

The Hall of the Hundred Columns

Even though the name suggests 100 columns, the Hypostyle Room features only 86 stone columns. Each of these columns are intricately designed with colourful mosaic pieces and assumes the shape of trees. It is safe to say that the Hypostyle room further proves that Gaudi was heavily inspired by nature.

The Laundry Room Portico

Another example of Gaudi's naturalistic designs, the Laundry Room Portico is shaped to resemble a wave. In order to achieve this effect, Gaudi built the structure atop a series of slanting columns. This structure is often recognized for its artistic brilliance.

The Garden of Austria

In 1977, the park received a donation of trees from Austria. It is from this even that the garden received its name. Starkly different from the rest of the park, the Garden of Austria is a must-visit for its breathtaking views. From here, visitors can also see that house that was occupied by Gaudi and his family.
