The Rose Tattoo on Broadway is scheduled to play at the American Airlines Theatre until December 9, 2019.

After months of incessant anticipation and headline-grabbing developments, Trip Cullman’s revered revival of The Rose Tattoo has finally lifted the curtain on the previews at the American Airlines Theater. The play is based on Tennessee Williams’ 1951 classic of the same name. The Roundabout Theater Company Production was previously staged at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016. This revival of The Rose Tattoo also stars Emun Elliott, Andréa Burns, and Carolyn Mignini alongside Cassie Beck, Alexander Bello, Tina Benko, Susan Cella, Paige Gilbert, Greg Hildreth, Isabella Iannelli, Jacob Michael Laval, Ellyn Marie Marsh, Ella Rubin, Jennifer Sánchez, and Burke Swanson. Marisa Tomei is returning to the Broadway stage for the first time since 2014 and it is a great chance to witness the acting prowess that has brought her an Academy Award and several nominations over her illustrious career.
The Rose Tattoo has been around for about seven decades. The play had initially faced the wrath of the church for depicting issues like women’s liberation and sexual repression on stage. Despite that (and partially because of it) the play has remained popular among the general public. The play places Serafina, a Sicilian woman with three children at the center of the tempestuous plot. After losing her husband, Serafina has to deal with her family and its needs. This leads her to put her own desires to the backburner. It is only much later that she realizes how her life has taken a drastic turn. The titular rose tattoo assumes a symbolic significance throughout the play. That’s where the overwhelming success of the director lies. Now that the shock and awe value of the play has taken a beating, it requires a certain mastery of the theater basics to keep a play like this relevant. Trip Cullman does that remarkably well.
