Travel guides and tips

  • London has 14 National Museums and over 250 registered art installations that are home to the Ancient Egypt collection, dinosaur exhibitions, First World War Galleries, paintings, sculptures, metalwork, and textiles. This makes it the go-to place for aesthetes across the globe.
  • The most popular museums in London are:
    • British Museum: A British Museum London tour presents a collection of human history, art and culture with over eight million permanent collections.
    • Natural History Museum: The National History Museum is a science museum of natural history collections of animals, plants, fungi, ecosystems, geology, palaeontology, climatology, and more. They also include interactive experiences to explore natural history.
    • Royal Museums Greenwich: Royal Museums of Greenwich gives four museums in Greenwich, namely, the National Maritime Museum, Queen's House, Royal Observatory, and Cutty Sark. The Royal Museums Greenwich tickets give you access to the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark and the Queen's House.
    • Imperial War Museum: Out of the 5 branches of the Imperial War Museum, 3 are located in London: Imperial War Museum London, HMS Belfast, and Churchill War Rooms that provide records of the civil and military war effort, and the sacrifice made by Britain during the First World War.
    • Museum of London: This museum shows the journey of the UK capital from prehistoric times to the present.
  • The best museums in London for kids are:
    • V&A Museum of Childhood: A branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum, V&A Museum of Childhood was founded in 1872 and focuses on the social history of childhood, building confidence, cultural capital and design skills in children.
    • London Transport Museum: Learn about the heritage of transport in the city, stories from people who worked in and for it for the past 200 years, and the future technologies that will transform London at the London Transport Museum.
    • National Maritime Museum: A part of the Royal Museums Greenwich, National Maritime Museum is home to more than two million items of everything sea, navigation, and astronomical study.
    • Natural History Museum: Natural History Museum exhibits an exciting range of displays of life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items under botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology, and zoology.
    • The Cartoon Museum: The Cartoon Museum is every child’s dream house comprising British cartoons, caricatures and comic strips of 5,000 books and 4,000 comics owned by the Cartoon Art Trust.
  • Skip-the-line tickets allow you to skip the long waiting lines at the ticket counter and enter the museum with a wave of the phone. While most museums have skip-the-line tickets, some only offer admission tickets. Alternatively, if you are purchasing guided tours, they by default include skip-the-line access to the museums.
  • City passes in London include skip-the-line access, Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour in London, and a free guidebook to famous museums such as:
    • The National Gallery
    • The Natural History Museum
    • The British Museum
    • The Tate Modern Museum
    • Imperial War Museum
  • Children, senior citizens, EU citizens, and students with valid ID proof can enjoy discounted tickets in selected museums. Additionally, Headout offers cashback up to 10% on selected museum tickets in London.
  • The cancelation policy varies depending on the type of ticket you purchase. While some museum tickets in London allow you to cancel up to 24/48/72 hours before your scheduled visit, some of them cannot be canceled or rescheduled.
  • There are two museums that stand apart from their peers as the biggest museums in London. The British Museum, covering 18.5 acres of floor space, is the largest museum in London while Victoria & Albert Museum with 4.5 million objects, has the most permanent displays.
  • There are not many days on which London museums offer free entries. However, many of the top museums in the city such as the British Museum and National Gallery do not have entry fees.
  • Here are 14 free museums in London that offer free entry:
    • British Museum
    • National Gallery.
    • Victoria and Albert Museum
    • Tate Modern
    • Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman Amphitheater

    • National Army Museum
    • Royal Academy of Arts

  • Not all London museums allow photography. Some of the bigger museums that allow photography are the British Museum, V&A, Museum of London and Science Museum. National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and British Library strictly prohibit photography. Flash photography is not allowed in almost all museums since it can damage ancient paintings/materials.
  • The best time to visit museums in London is on weekdays, during the early opening hours or right before closing to avoid long queues. Exclusive night tours are offered by many museums which are also a great way to explore them without the tourist swarms.
  • Most of the museums in London are closed on Christmas (25th December) and operate as usual on New Year's (1st January).

We had to squeeze the British Museum into the final day in London. Having a reservation to avoid the long lines on Easter weekend allowed us to have 3 full hours touring the wonders housed in this magnificent place.

From the main entrance, the whole experience was mind blowing. The kids were absolutely excited. We took loads of pictures with our favourite celebrities. Will definitely be back again. I have recommended it to so many of my friends who were fascinated with our pictures. Nice place to be!

It was easy to book the ticket on headout. Went to a smaller exhibition like this in Amsterdam and loved it. So had a mum and daughter day here, which was perfect.

The art and how each piece was played out. As in positioned so it was easier to not to get overwhelmed by it. So it would force you to spend more time to experience it. (by looking at it and read about it)
