David Byrne's American Utopia extends Broadway run from its earlier announced closing date (19th January 2020) to 16th February 2020.
American Utopia, the theatrical concert event by David Byrne, is ready to blow Broadway audiences away for an extended period. It was originally supposed to play from 20th October 2019 till 19th January 2020 but has now been extended till 16th February 2020. Byrne is one of the greatest contemporary artists in the world, and has created music for TV, movies and collaborated with several musicians. An Academy, Grammy and Drama Desk Award- winner, he even has his name in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. American Utopia reunites Byrne with director Alex Timbers and choreographer Annie-B Parson. The set has lighting designed by Rob Sinclair, sound designed by Pete Keppler and musical directors Karl Mansfield and Mauro Refosco.
The show features songs from Byrne’s 2018 album of the same name, as well as hits from his time as the Talking Heads lead singer and guitarist. The performance is augmented by an immensely talented group of international musicians: Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan, and Bobby Wooten III. Byrne released the original album on Nonesuch Records in March 2018, which then became his first album to reach No. 1 on the Album Chart, and was also his first to reach the Top Five on the Billboard 200 chart. The theatrical concert played more than 150 dates in 27 countries over nine months in 2018 and was named Best International Contemporary Concert at Australia’s 2019 Helpmann Awards.

The theme of the album and the show is as the title suggests, the search for an American Utopia. In Byrne’s own words, “These songs don't describe this imaginary and possibly impossible place, but rather they attempt to describe the world we live in now—and that world, when we look at it, as we live in it, as it impacts us—immediately commands us to ask ourselves - Is there another way?
