Broadway News: Mean Girls
Mean Girls at the 2018 Tony Awards
Mean Girls, the iconic American teen comedy film, made its Broadway debut in April 2018.
Based on the screenplay by Tina Fey (who has been nominated in the Best Book of a Musical category for this musical), the story of Mean Girls resonates with audiences just as much today as it did when the movie first came out in 2004.
The story centres around Cady Heron, who moves from Kenya to Evanston, and tries to adjust to the jungle that is high school. She soon becomes friends with The Plastics, with the intention of ruining the “fabulous but evil” Queen Bee, Regina George.
Mean Girls musical has been nominated for a whopping 12 Tonys this year, including a nomination for Best Musical.
Mean Girls on Broadway: Reviews
We hope you like pink, because Mean Girls is here to stay. The musical is, as Gretchen Weiners would say, so ‘fetch’. Here’s what everyone else is saying about the Mean Girls musical on Broadway:
‘It’s not shocking that Mean Girls is a fast-paced fancy funtime, but it’s a real treat to find that it’s still witty, worldly, and wise.’
‘If you loved the movie, if you found it as 'fetch' as Plastics sub-lieutenant Gretchen Wieners (here played by Ashley Park) would wish, then you will also love this musical’
- The Daily Beast
‘Best of all, in a marketplace filled with mindless work about teens, here’s one that doesn’t insult their intelligence — or yours.’
- The Washington Post
Meet the Mean Girls Broadway Cast
Having gotten itself a cult following over the years, Lindsay Lohan-starrer Mean Girls has made its Broadway debut. Tina Fey, who brings her brand of wry humor on the stage once again after the film, scripts the show’s book.
The musical on Broadway has a stellar cast, who bring the beloved Mean Girls characters to life. Playing the role of Cady Heron in her first huge role is Erika Henningsen. Taylor Louderman, who starred in Broadway’s Kinky Boots, plays the role of Mean Girl leader Regina George. Ashley Park (of KPOP fame) and Kate Rockwell (of ‘Bring It On: The Musical’ fame) complete the ‘Plastics’ trio playing Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith respectively.
Playing the role of Cady’s best friends are Barrett Wilbert Weed (Janis) and Grey Henson (Damian). Cady and Regina’s love interest Aaron is played by Kyle Selig, while Ms Norbury is portrayed by Kerry Butler.
With such a power packed cast, it’s no wonder the Mean Girls musical has been making so many waves.
Mean Girls: From Silver Screen to Stage
The now-iconic teen film Mean Girls made waves with its funny storyline and relatable characters when it released in 2004.
The film centers around Cady, a homeschooled child, who finds herself in the big bad world of High School, and has to fit in, taking the viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. Filled with social distinctions, teenage bullying, and social ostracization, the film hit a raw nerve with many teenage girls. What made the film stand out was the redemption each character had in the end.
After all the success Mean Girls saw on the silver screen, it now makes its debut on Broadway. Tina Fey, the film’s screenwriter, joins in to write a book for the musical.
Here’s to Mean Girls now making an impact on Broadway too.
