Galleria Borghese is spectacular, and having the tickets at hand to avoid the queue was phenomenal. The day that we went was actually sold out when we arrived, so it was great to be able to see the works of art inside. Super recommended.

The tour was excellent. Unfortunately we were never picked up and we were waiting at 7:30 for a 7:45 pickup. Called US number and spoke with someone who transferred me to someone else who never answered. So not only were we out the extra for transportation- which I would expect you to refund- but also had to take a cab at the last minute in order to make the tour

Guide was very knowledgeable about the art and sculptures. However, I think she spent rather longer on Bernini, so we had less time at the end with Caravaggio and were asked to leave. Nevertheless she was very good.

Galleria Borghese in Rome boasts a rich collection of art, including paintings and sculptures by some of the greatest artists to have ever lived. Here are a few Borghese Gallery highlights:

Apollo and Daphne, Bernini

A life-sized Baroque model by Bernini, Apollo and Daphne was built between 1622 and 1625. The work is a climax to the story of Apollo and Daphne from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Despite being a statue, it wonderfully captures the movement of the fluidity of the subjects, a testament to Bernini’s skill.

Ratto di Proserpina, Bernini

A group of Baroque sculptures built by Bernini, Ratto di Proserpina depicts the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto. Considered to be one of Bernini’s most famous works, the statue is made using a unique Carrera marble that imparts a sense of softness. The incredible detailing on the sculpture is something that will surely astound you.

La Verita, Bernini

Better known as ‘Truth unveiled by Time’, this statue by Bernini was never completed. The statue depicts a woman, who is Truth, and she holds the Sun in her hands and has her feet on the globe. The figure standing over her was supposed to be time but was never completed.

Sleeping Hermaphrodite, Bernini

Although over 20 different variations of the Sleeping Hermaphrodite exist, the one at the Borghese Gallery is considered the finest. Bernini sculpted the mattress on which the statue currently lies. It is present in Room V of the Borghese Gallery.

David Con La Testa Di Golia, Caravaggio

Also known as David with the Head of Goliath, this painting by the eminent Caravaggio is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance Art. The expression on David’s face is a mix of sadness and compassion, and Caravaggio depicts him to be pensive rather than jubilant. What is most interesting about the painting is that it was created by Caravaggio when he was charged with murder and on the run.

Dama Con Liocorna, Raphael

The first thing that stands out in Raphael’s Dama Con Liocorna is the piercing look in the subject’s eyes. The painting has an eerie likeness to Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The unicorn present in the painting is supposed to indicate purity.

Melissa, Dosso Dossi

The imaginative brushstrokes of Melissa are breathtaking to see in person. Inspired by eminent Italian painter Raphael, Dosso Dossi makes Melissa look royal and imposing, holding a tablet and torch in each hand.
The Villa Borghese Gardens are spread across an area of nearly 200 acres and house the Borghese Gallery, in addition to several buildings. The gardens are immaculately maintained and feature a variety of flora and fauna.
Some of the other famous attractions in the gardens are the Villa Medici, Museo Carlo Bilotti, and Museo Pietro Canonia. The must-see attractions at the gardens include Casino di Raffaello, Bioparco di Roma Zoo. Pincian Hill, and the Victorian Water Clock.
