Pro tips to help you make a pick

Tickets for the Borghese Gallery are strictly available through advance booking. Tickets are highly likely to get sold out, especially during peak seasons.

Use your pre-booked tickets to skip past the long lines, and enhance your visit with a multilingual audio guide or a hosted entry.

Consider joining a tour led by an art historian guide providing in-depth insights into the art, history, and context of the gallery’s masterpieces. It's an intimate experience with just 15 guests in a group!

Entry to the Borghese Gallery is typically for a limited period (usually two hours). Manage your time well to explore the collections thoroughly.

Wheelchair users can access the basement area for tickets. Additionally, wheelchairs are available for use on each floor. However, elevators are narrow, and certain tours might not accommodate wheelchairs. Check your tickets in advance to confirm the same.

Unfortunately, the Borghese Garden doesn't offer specific kids' programs or interactive areas in English. Strollers are allowed only for kids up to the age 2.

Did you know?

The gallery once housed masterpieces stolen by Napoleon from conquered cities. While most were returned, a few, like Canova's 'Pauline Bonaparte', remain as reminders of the gallery's turbulent past.

It is believed that Caravaggio gifted the painting 'David with the Head of Goliath' to Pope Paul V. It was an act of pardon for killing a man in a barfight and absconding for some years.

The Borghese Gallery has a third floor which is a storeroom containing over 260 paintings that could not find space in the Gallery.

In 2020, a tourist broke the toes of 'Pauline Borghese as Venus Victrix' by sitting on the statue for a selfie.

Why visit Borghese Gallery?

Renaissance masterpieces

Encounter exquisite Renaissance artworks by masters like Caravaggio and Raphael. Witness unparalleled skill and emotional depth in every brushstroke.

Bernini's Baroque brilliance

Marvel at Gian Lorenzo Bernini's stunning Baroque sculptures. Highlights include sculptures like Apollo and Daphne, where movement and emotion are captured with breathtaking realism.

Caravaggio's Chiaroscuro technique

Chiaroscuro is an art technique where light and shadow are dramatically juxtaposed. Caravaggio was an expert in this technique; he explores humanity's complexities through his powerful works like 'David with the Head of Goliath'.

Villa Borghese Gardens

Explore the picturesque Villa Borghese Gardens surrounding the gallery. Manicured landscapes and tranquil lakes provide a peaceful retreat amidst the city's hustle and bustle.

Timeless elegance

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of the Borghese family's former residence. The villa is adorned with exquisite frescoes, ornate ceilings, and opulent decor, offering a glimpse into Italy's aristocratic past.

Highlights

Villa Borghese

The 17th-century Villa Borghese was commissioned by the Borghese family and designed by Flaminio Ponzio. Located outside Porta Pinciana in Rome, the villa has a light and airy structure adorned with reliefs and ancient sculptures. It now houses the Borghese Gallery, which showcases Italian Renaissance and Baroque art.

Villa Borghese Gardens

Perched atop Rome's Pincian Hill, Villa Borghese Gardens boasts Piazza del Popolo's panoramic vistas. Transformed from vineyards in the 1600s by a Cardinal, it was further revamped in 1903 to suit English tastes. Now, with 90+ points of interest, it hosts attractions like the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Bioparco Di Roma Zoo and Villa Medici.

My day begins with a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo. Before me, the cylindrical mass of Castel Sant'Angelo rises like a sleeping giant that has shed its skin a thousand times: from imperial tomb to impregnable fortress, from prison to papal residence. I climb the spiral ramps, feeling the dampness of the millennia-old walls, until I emerge onto the Terrace of the Angel. There, at the foot of the bronze sword, the visitor is left breathless. Rome unfolds at its feet like a carpet of ochre-colored rooftops, and the dome of St. Peter’s seems so close you could almost touch it. Then, after a short walk, I reach the Pantheon. I enter quickly, without any trouble despite the presence of countless tourists. Crossing the threshold, I am overwhelmed by a sacred silence. I look up and lose myself in the immense dome, the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. The Oculus, that perfect circle open to infinity, captures a cylinder of light that cuts through the darkness like a divine blade. I stop at the exact center of the building. I feel tiny beneath that opening that welcomes the sun (and the rain, which falls here like diamond dust). Between the tombs of the kings and the silent grace of Raphael, I realize that if Castel Sant’Angelo is history in flux, the Pantheon is eternity standing still. It is now evening; I return to the hotel tired but happy. A fantastic day, thanks also to you.

As it happened, we’d planned to visit the Pantheon on the day we arrived. We were a bit tired by the time we got there. There was a long queue for tickets to the right of the entrance. But we had fast-track tickets. So we went round the back on the left and went straight into the Pantheon. It was brilliant.

Unfortunately my trip came to an end, fortunately though, the last part of my trip towards the airfield was very relaxed. Not crowded, or in any case, didn't feel like it might have been. Because people were helpfull, friendly and the signs directed us passengers, perfectly to the right train at the right time. As a matter of fact, it went so well, that because I was early, I could even change my trainride to an earlier and yet more convenient time, which saved me 30 minutes, which mad the flight and checkin at the airport also much more pleasant. Seats were great, long legs no problem. Room enough for suitcases and the rails were almost quiet.
