Fake news, shocking reality television and outrageous entertainment programs have been heralded as the death of civilization for many decades now. The Broadway play ‘Network’ explores the hold of technology over human intellect and how large corporations influence the media that is consumed by the masses. The play written by Lee Hall for Broadway follows the story of beleaguered TV news anchor Howard Beale, brilliantly portrayed by Bryan Cranston, and the quagmire of TV ratings. Network is an immersive play that uses technology in the innovative set design and great acting to highlight the dangers of disruptive technology.

Network : Broadway Story

Network is based on a 1976 film of the same title that swept the Oscars that year. The story is based on the life of Howard Beale, a network news anchor who is struggling with the demands of the workplace. The TV industry is cutthroat and the ratings of the show UBS Evening News anchored by Beale are plummeting, and when Howard learns that the show is shutting down, he announces he will commit suicide on Live television.

Instead of taking it off the air, the network decides to change the show to ‘The Howard Beale Show’ and exploit Beale’s antics. The show’s ratings shoot through the roof, highlighting voyeuristic audiences who are craving for the next shocking programming. The entire show is driven by a female executive Diana Christensen who thinks nothing of engaging a terrorist group for a reality show. Watch the ‘Network’ to find out what happens to Howard Beale and his show.

“Network’ With Bryan Cranston Is Convulsive, Immersive and Still Mad as Hell”

“The success of the show, which runs for two hours without interval, lies in its capacity to use every facet of live theatre to warn us against surrendering our humanity to an overpowering medium, whether it be television or invasive technology.”
