African Cup of Nations

The genesis of the Africa Cup of Nations was at the FIFA Congress in Lisbon where the Confederation of African Football (CAF) laid its foundation. Since its inaugural tournament in 1957, which featured only three countries, it has expanded significantly, both in size and prestige. Historically, nations like Ghana and Cameroon have been dominant forces, contributing to the fierce competitiveness of the games. The tournament, initially biennial, shifted to odd-numbered years in 2013, avoiding overlaps with the World Cup. Hosting grants automatic qualification, and from the outset of 24 teams, only 16 advance from the group stages. Over the decades, the tournament has transformed into a spectacle of skill and camaraderie, punctuated by dramatic moments and rising football stars who captivate audiences across Africa and beyond.
