About Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica preserves a complete urban fabric: streets, insulae, warehouses, baths, taverns, temples, and public latrines that you can enter and navigate on foot. That makes it distinct from museums built around relocated finds or ruins centered on one monument. Art stays in place here too, especially at the Terme di Nettuno and in several mithraea, with the Museo Ostiense adding statues and inscriptions.

Unlike Pompeii, Ostia was not destroyed by a single catastrophe. The city declined gradually as the harbor silted up and trade routes shifted, leaving large areas abandoned and later buried.

The Decumanus Maximus runs for over a kilometer and forms a long orientation spine through the city, lined with shops, baths, and public buildings.

Ostia still preserves multi-story brick insulae, rare survivals that show how dense urban housing could look in the Roman world.

Ostia’s synagogue, near the ancient shoreline, is among the earliest known synagogues in the western Roman Empire.

Large-scale excavations began in the late 19th century and intensified under Mussolini, who promoted Ostia’s Roman heritage alongside the development of modern Ostia.

Views from the 2nd-Century Teatro di Ostia

The Teatro di Ostia still preserves its stone seating and was rebuilt under Commodus and Septimius Severus. Climbing the steps gives you elevated views across the ruins and toward the adjacent Piazzale delle Corporazioni.

Black-and-White Mosaics at the Terme di Nettuno

The Terme di Nettuno is one of the site’s most memorable bath complexes, known for black-and-white mosaics of Neptune and marine creatures. Because the floors remain in place in the open-air courtyard, you see the artwork in the setting where Romans used it.

Ostia Antica is especially strong on everyday Roman life. You can explore multi-story insulae such as the Insula of Diana, look into taverns with counters, and see communal latrines and bakeries with mills that show how ordinary residents lived and worked.

Main Entrance - Viale dei Romagnoli

Located at Viale dei Romagnoli 717, opposite the medieval borgo of Ostia Antica, this is the principal public entrance for all visitors. The ticket office, information point, turnstiles, museum access, bookshop, and nearby café are clustered in this entrance area. If you already have a ticket or tour voucher, staff scan it here; some third-party vouchers or concessions may still need validation at the ticket office. Expect a ticket-purchase queue and a bag/security check before entry. Lines are usually described as short, but weekends and free-entry days can be busier. The area around the gate is relatively flat, though the archaeological park beyond quickly becomes uneven and challenging for wheelchairs or anyone with limited mobility.

The ancient Roman port of Ostia. The site is well preserved and maintained. Very similar to Pompeii. It is an experience to jump back 2000 years and imagine how people lived here in the past. Highly recommended for those visiting Rome. Daniel

Easy access once you have the tickets. But make sure you actually receive the PDF tickets. I finally received them after messaging customer service for two hours. You couldn’t activate the Roma Pass using the QR code they showed on the app.

It’s really convenient to be able to use all forms of public transportation so easily. And waiting in line isn’t a problem either. Even when the electronic system at a museum went down, we were still able to get in. Everyone else had to leave. All in all, the pass was a great solution for us.

It was extremely difficult to get the ticket because there were apparently incorrect announcements about where to pick it up. A 40-minute walk, a missed time slot at the Colosseum—really a bummer. Why can’t you get the ticket online? Then I had to make several in-person visits to two offices; the staff were super friendly and super helpful. I would never book this ticket again—it’s too unclear what’s included, too expensive, and too old-fashioned.
