Pro tips to help you make a pick

Basic Colosseum access doesn’t include the Arena Floor, Underground, or levels 3–5. Visiting these areas requires a separate access experience.

Queues at the Colosseum can be long, especially in peak season. Booking in advance with a timed slot helps reduce waiting and lets you head straight to the entrance after security.

Short on time? Choose an express guided tour to explore the Colosseum in just an hour. Keep in mind express tours don’t include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, unlike standard tours, which typically last around 3 hours.

Most Colosseum access options also include entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. As these sites don’t always operate on timed entry, some waiting may still be expected.

The Colosseum can be crowded year-round. Opt for a small-group guided tour to explore the highlights with a knowledgeable local guide.

While daytime tours are aplenty, consider booking a night tour to experience the Colosseum in a different light. The floodlit monument takes on a magical aura, and the crowds are significantly smaller.

Did you know?

The Colosseum once had a retractable roof called the ‘velarium’, made of linen and controlled by sailors.

The Colosseum's underground tunnels, known as ‘hypogeum’, contained cages for gladiators and animals.

Emperor Vespasian financed the Colosseum's construction using the spoils from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

In the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was believed to be a place of martyrdom for early Christians, leading to its preservation. Today, the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession to the amphitheater on Good Friday.

Though largely ruined, the Colosseum's original marble facade was once adorned with bronze statues and colorful frescoes.

Why visit Colosseum?

Engineering prowess

As the largest ancient amphitheater ever built, the Colosseum showcases Roman engineering and architectural innovation, including advanced techniques in construction and design that were groundbreaking for their time. Its ability to hold tens of thousands of spectators with intricate exit strategies and the implementation of the velarium (retractable roof) exemplify ancient Rome's architectural sophistication.

Architectural wonder

The Colosseum was built in the Ancient Roman architectural style. Construction took about seven to eight years, making it one of the largest and most complex structures. The columns were built using three different styles. Made of concrete and stone, the Colosseum is 620 feet long, 513 feet wide, and 157 feet high. It could seat an estimated 50,000 spectators.

Glimpse into Ancient Rome

Built in the 1st century CE, the Colosseum offers visitors a vivid window into the past, providing insights into the social and political life of ancient Rome. It was a venue for gladiatorial combats, public spectacles, and dramas, playing a crucial role in the cultural and entertainment practices of the Roman Empire. As you stand atop one of the seating areas you can imagine the roars of 50,000 ancient Romans excited to watch the Gladiators fight.

The Underground and Upper tiers

The Colosseum's hypogeum (underground chambers) and its upper tiers offer unique perspectives on how the venue operated, from the preparation of gladiators and animals to the experience of spectators. These features underscore the complexity and functionality of the structure.

Central location

When it comes to Rome, the best seats in the house go to the Colosseum. It is easily accessible and makes for a perfect starting point to discover other iconic sites like the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Nowhere else in the world can you walk the path of ancient Romans before stepping back out to grab a slice and an Aperol Spritz at a bustling café.

Picking up the tickets went smoothly and quickly at the small office. Thanks to the early time slot, it took less than 20 minutes to get into the Colosseum. Next up were the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. No problems there either. I’d recommend setting aside at least 4 hours to explore all three. But of course, you can spend more time if you like. You should have an interest in architecture and ancient history.

Why Headout, they had the tickets I wanted when no one else did. Super passes to allow me entry to the House of Agustas Ceaser and his wife Livia. Augustas and Livia were a 50 year partnership that ruled the Roman Empire successfully. Augustas died of natural causes he wasn't assassinated/killed like most of his predecessors and successors. Their houses were not the palaces of Nero and Caligula. Some of our current leaders could learn from the modesty of their acomadation and greatness of their achievements evidenced by what I got to see because of my Headout Super passes.
