Celebrities are just like us and love to travel! Of course, they can afford to do it in more style and extravagance than mere mortals, although some choose not to (hey there, Bear Grylls). These 12 stars have the travel bug.

12 Celebrities Who Love to Travel

#1 Bill Murray

The legendary Bill Murray tries to fit in as much travel as he can while he works. The actor admits, “I live a little bit on the seat of my pants”, so some of the things he gets up to are not surprising. He went to Berlin to promote The Monuments Men and ended up going on an impromptu solo overnight train trip to Prague and back again in time for a 9:00a.m. press conference. In the mid-1980s, Murray took a four-year break from acting, moving to Paris to study philosophy at the Sorbonne: “It was the best thing I ever did”.

#2 Benedict Cumberbatch

Before becoming famous as Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch took a gap year to teach English at a Tibetan monastery. He taught monks with an age range of 8 to 40 but insists they taught him more than he could ever possibly teach them. He has happy memories, commenting, “The monastery was a fantastic experience; you lived your life by very limited means, although you were given board and lodgings.”

#3 George Clooney

George Clooney lives la dolce vita in Italy and is a regular on Lake Como, where he has a huge estate. Parts of his blockbuster movie Ocean’s Twelve were filmed at his villa in Laglio. He also returned to get married to Amal Alamuddin in Venice in 2014 and the newlyweds spent time traveling through the Italian countryside via a Vespa moped and Fiat 500.

#4 Sofia Vergara

In case you’re under the impression that travel is purely the domain of white male privilege, here’s a globetrotting Latina. Sofia Vergara is now the world's highest-paid TV actress, but from 1995 to 1998 she co-hosted a travel show. In Fuera de Serie, she visited exotic places around the world and the show made her a star in the Latin American market. The Colombian actress says, "I like traveling and organising trips to new places with my family.”

#5 Bear Grylls

It’s one thing to have the travel bug, but Bear goes further and chows down on it. The British adventurer is famous for his survival skills. He’s drunk fecal liquid from elephant dung, eaten deer droppings and used the corpse of a sheep as a sleeping bag. He doesn’t do this because he’s broke; this is his bread and butter - not that you’ll ever see him eating anything as normal as that. His favorite destinations include Mount Everest, Greenland’s vast expanse of wilderness and the considerably less-hostile Panama City.

#6 Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz sure does want to fly away as his famous song suggests. The singer and actor divides his time between international homes in Brazil, Paris and the Bahamas. Heavily into interior design, he seeks inspiration on his adventures and particularly enjoys the aesthetic appeal of Copenhagen and Paris. However, the latter appeals to his stomach too -- “There's a big, fat, greasy man inside of me. I live in Paris half the year, and I love indulging in pastries and fine foods and wine and Champagne.”

#7 Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren is another fan of Italy and enjoys escaping to her renovated house in Salento. She loves the people and the climate there. She also has plenty of respect for East Los Angeles, telling Conde Nast Traveler, "Individual style is hard to find in L.A., but I like ‘East Los' for its edginess and the beautiful murals – you could do a proper art walk taking them all in.” Hungary gets the Dame’s seal of approval too: “I love that Hungarians are always going out eating, drinking and chatting. They're not long out of communism, so they have such an appreciation for freedom, especially in terms of bohemian fashion."

#8 Viggo Mortensen

Every bit as adventurous as the characters he plays, Viggo loves New Zealand where he filmed The Lord of the Rings. He’s visited Argentina and Japan several times and enjoys walking around Paris, London and Madrid. As you can imagine, he’s a traveler who seeks the adventure of being on the road and the genuine connections he makes: “I find the more one travels, the more places one can call home and the better you’ll get along with people and also yourself.”

#9 Angelina Jolie

One half of the artist couple formerly known as ‘Brangelina’, Angelina gets to have a name in her very own right again! Presumably, the prolific traveler will also continue to have some awesome journeys in her work as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN. So far she's visited Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pakistan.

#10 Andrew McCarthy

Remember those eighties cult classics like St Elmo’s Fire and Pretty in Pink? Well, former Brat Pack star Andrew McCarthy gave up acting for a while to become a travel writer. His travel memoir The Longest Way Home: One Man’s Quest for the Courage to Settle Down was a bestseller and he was named Travel Journalist of the Year by The Society of American Travel Writers in 2010. He’s now an editor at National Geographic Traveler.

#11 Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey is an avid road tripper, traveling solo or with friends and family. Whether he's driving his Airstream trailer along back roads, catching a music festival near Timbuktu or hiking in South America, he loves to be on the move. These days, he spends more time traveling with his wife Camila and their three kids.

#11 Beyonce

Queen B and her entire family are huge on wanderlust. From her picture perfect moments with her OG Instagram husband to the most adorable next level snapshots with their entire family, this is as #travelgoals as it gets.
