Pro tips to help you make a pick

Book your Schönbrunn Palace tickets at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance and remember that all tickets are for a fixed time slot; you must enter at the exact time you selected during booking.

Steer clear of peak hours between 10am and 2pm, especially from June to August and during Christmas and Easter holidays. Arrive by 8:30am when the palace opens, or book the last afternoon slot for a quieter experience.

Choose a guided tour to make the most of your visit. With over 1,400 rooms and only 20 to 22 open to the public, having context will help you appreciate the art, history, and royal stories behind what you see.

Consider a combo pass to save both time and money. The Schönbrunn Palace and Vienna Zoo ticket includes palace entry, the zoo, and seasonal gardens for less than buying each separately.

Make time to explore the palace park, which opens at 6:30am and is free to enter. It is ideal for early morning walks, photography, or simply enjoying the Baroque landscaping before the main attractions open.

Remember the photography rules as photos are welcome in the gardens and park, but not allowed inside the palace’s historic rooms.

About Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs, is one of Vienna’s most treasured landmarks. Tour gilded Rococo staterooms, stroll through vast Baroque gardens lined with sculptures and fountains, and enjoy unique experiences like classical concerts in historic halls or a visit to the world’s oldest zoo. Whether you’re drawn by imperial history, family fun, or peaceful green spaces, Schönbrunn promises a full day of discovery in Austria’s capital.

Did you know?

Schönbrunn Palace boasts 1,441 rooms, but only 45 are open to the public, each preserved with original 18th-century furnishings.

The palace gardens have been open to the public since 1779, making them one of Europe’s oldest continuously accessible royal parks.

Schönbrunn Zoo, founded in 1752, remains the oldest continuously operating zoo in the world.

Six-year-old Mozart famously performed for Empress Maria Theresa in the Hall of Mirrors at Schönbrunn in 1762.

Schönbrunn Palace was the birthplace of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled Austria for nearly 68 years.

Schönbrunn’s Neptune Fountain aligns perfectly with the Gloriette, creating a grand central axis through the gardens.

The palace Orangery is one of the largest in Europe, still used for wintering citrus trees and hosting concerts.

Why visit Schönbrunn Palace?

Walk through imperial grandeur

Once the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty, Schönbrunn Palace is a living time capsule. Step into gilded staterooms where emperors and empresses once hosted lavish banquets, stand in the Hall of Mirrors where Mozart performed at age six, and see original furnishings that tell centuries of royal stories.

Explore gardens fit for royalty

Beyond the palace walls lies a masterpiece of Baroque landscaping. Stroll through tree-lined avenues, ornate fountains and marble statues. Whether you’re snapping photos at the Neptune Fountain or enjoying a quiet moment in the Orangery, the gardens are as much an attraction as the palace itself.

Meet the world's oldest zoo residents

Schönbrunn Zoo, nestled within the palace grounds, is the oldest operating zoo on the planet. Opened in 1752, the zoo is home to over 700 species, from rare giant pandas to Siberian tigers, making it a must for animal lovers and families.

Soak in unique cultural experiences

Attend a classical concert in the historic Orangery, where Mozart once performed, or enjoy a traditional apple strudel show at Café Residenz. Seasonal events like the Christmas market add extra magic to your visit.

Take in views from the Gloriette

For sweeping views of Vienna, make your way to the Gloriette, a triumphal arch overlooking the palace gardens and city skyline. Once the imperial court’s dining hall, it’s now a charming café where you can sip coffee while soaking in views worthy of a royal postcard.

Plan your visit

Main entrance (Ehrenhof Gate)

Situated at the grand Ehrenhof courtyard on Schönbrunn Palace Street, this is the main gateway to all palace tours and ticketed attractions. Just a 5-minute walk from the Schönbrunn U-Bahn (U4) station, it offers full wheelchair accessibility with wide, step-free paths and ramps. Here you’ll find the ticket counters, security checks, and the main visitor information desk, making it the ideal starting point for your visit.

Orangery entrance

Situated on the eastern side of the palace complex, near the Schönbrunn Orangery, this entrance is ideal for guests attending evening concerts or arriving by tour bus. It is also wheelchair accessible, with level access and proximity to the parking garage and drop-off area.

Gardens entrance (Hietzinger Tor)

Found at the western edge of the palace grounds, this entrance leads directly into the public gardens and is perfect for those coming from Hietzing or visiting the Palm House and Desert House. The gate is step-free and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. It’s a popular access point for locals and families enjoying the park.

I live close to Wroclaw ZOO, which is one of the biggest in the world (in number of species) so I had a big expectations and I did not dissapoint. Main point was for me the Pandas. Except this You have wonderfull an opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with your animal residents. We also really enjoyed the additional architectural touches that reflect the age of the Vienna facility. You’re really doing a great job!

Everything went well; the guide spoke excellent English, and in addition to the tour of the palace, he also showed us part of the gardens. The directions to the meeting place were a bit vague; we looked for the flag for a good few minutes before realizing there wasn’t one...

The question was how public transportation works with this card, so 5 stars. I haven't been able to set up the discounts yet, but in my experience, it's a bit of a hassle. I'll try again today. I couldn't change the star rating anymore, so you'll have to edit the original question to allow for more accurate and honest reviews!

We spent three days in Vienna, and the Vienna Pass was a great choice! It made it so easy to use the hop-on, hop-off buses, which run every 20 minutes from strategically located stops. Admission to almost all attractions is included in the Vienna Pass. St. Stephen’s Cathedral isn’t included, but it was so crowded that we only toured the cathedral’s ship, without a guided tour of the catacombs...etc... Thanks to the Vienna Pass, we got in very quickly at every attraction. Over the three days, we each saved around 90 euros. It was definitely worth it.

Organization and punctuality. We couldn't find any tickets left, and paying a little extra for the train option turned out to be a great choice because it's impossible to see everything on foot in just one morning. Plus, the train offers an audio guide in multiple languages.
