About Reina Sofia National Museum of Art Center

As a cornerstone of Madrid’s famed Art Walk, the Reina Sofía Museum is a must for any art collection journey. Its unrivaled focus on Spanish modern and contemporary art, from Cubism to Surrealism, complements the Prado and Thyssen museums, offering a complete panorama of artistic evolution in the heart of the city.

Did you know?

The museum’s main building was originally the 18th-century Sabatini Hospital, later transformed into a modern art space.

Picasso’s Guernica, the museum’s star attraction, measures over 11.5 feet tall and 25 feet wide—far larger than most visitors expect.

The Jean Nouvel extension, added in 2005, features three striking glass elevator towers and a triangular steel-and-glass atrium.

The Reina Sofía houses Spain’s largest collection of 20th-century art, with nearly 2,000 works spanning from 1881 to the present.

The museum’s art library is open to the public and contains over 100,000 volumes, making it a major resource for art research.

Experience the Reina Sofía with Dex

The Reina Sofía Dex experience is an interactive self-guided tour available exclusively with selected Reina Sofía admission tickets booked through Headout.

Put on your earphones and follow a story that unfolds through the old hospital building and its newer wing, connecting Guernica with the sketches, photographs, and works around it that explain how it was made and what it responded to.

Historical and fictional characters lead you through stories of Picasso painting Guernica for the 1937 Paris exhibition and the years it spent outside Spain; the Spanish Civil War and the art made during it; Dalí and Miró; and the eighteenth-century hospital the museum occupies and the glass lifts added to its façade, accompanied by original music and immersive sound design.

How Dex guides you through the museum

  • Dex uses your phone’s location to guide you along a recommended route covering the second-floor galleries leading to Guernica, the Dalí and Miró rooms, the post-war Spanish collection, the Nouvel building’s temporary galleries, and the courtyard garden.
  • As you reach each location, it automatically begins the story connected to what you are seeing.
  • The route is only the starting point. When a painting, a photograph, or a study catches your attention, pause and ask your Dex guide a question. Photograph a supported artwork or architectural detail to uncover more about it, open a related story, or return to the route when you are ready.
  • Dex also points you towards recommended viewpoints, photo spots, and the courtyard and quieter galleries that are easy to skip. You decide when to pause, where to go deeper, and when to continue.

How Dex differs from an audio guide and a group tour

An audio guide gives you a collection of prepared recordings. Dex builds those stories into a location-aware route, automatically connects them to what is around you, and lets you ask questions or investigate supported objects along the way.

A group tour gives you live interpretation from a human guide while following a scheduled departure, shared route, and group pace.

Dex offers a different experience: a structured tour that you can begin when you choose, pause whenever something interests you, and explore at your own pace. Choose Dex if you want the direction and storytelling of a guided visit with the freedom to explore the museum independently.

Unlock Reina Sofía Dex
