Pro tips to help you make a pick

If you're getting a standard ticket, consider a map or brochure to help navigate, as signage and information around the site can be sparse. For a more informative visit, opt for Pompeii tickets with an audio guide available in Italian, English, French, Spanish, or German.

Consider guided tours: A lot of the historical significance of Pompeii and the interesting tales of its preservation can be lost on you without a good guide. With guided tours in various languages, an expert guide will point out Pompei's intriguing past.

Ensure your ticket covers all of Pompeii’s attractions. Standard tickets, for example, may not include spots like the Villa of the Mysteries.

To make the most of Pompeii, book a guided tour. Small groups (under 15) provide a more personal experience, with guides available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese.

If you wish to go even deeper into Pompeii's history and remarkable archeology, go for an private tour led by an archaeologist. They’ll provide valuable insight into Pompeii’s preservation, restoration, and composition.

Combo tours to Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum give a fuller picture of the 79 AD eruption and are often more budget-friendly than separate tickets.

If you have a full day, book a tour from Naples or Sorrento to see Pompeii along with Herculaneum or Mount Vesuvius. These trips cover everything from transport to guided tours.

About Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii are a remarkable archeological site situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Ancient Roman buildings with stunning frescoes, theaters, baths, and even the casts of ancient Pompeians who met a tragic end are what remains of Pompeii, which was entombed by volcanic ash in AD 79.

Did you know?

After the destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD, the city was lost for 1500 years and was found accidentally in 1748, when excavations began. The archeological site is being excavated to this day and newer things are unearthed every day.

Excavations have discovered that Pompeii, being a port city and a safe haven for sailors had brothels and entertainment. Lupanare is the ruins of a brothel with explicit frescoes depicting the services offered.

Pompeii had an interesting fast-food culture. About 80 thermopolia, the McDonalds of the day, which served hot food and drinks, have been unearthed so far.

Ironically, it is the ash that destroyed Pompeii that came to preserve it so well. Archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli poured plaster into the cavities left in the volcanic ash by bodies that had rotted away and gave us the eerie human casts of Pompeians who died that fateful day.

Newer narratives have emerged since the excavations in 2018 with advanced equipment. The date of the eruption has now shifted to October 17th, 79 AD from August 24th. The celebrated “Two Maidens” locked in a poignant embrace may have been young male lovers. All this indicates that we can continue to expect a lot more from Pompeii.

Why visit Pompeii?

Portal to ancient Roman life

Pompeii gives you fascinating glimpses into the everyday life of ancient Romans. You will find plenty of artifacts, ruins of snack bars to brothels, and even the imprints of Pompeians in their final moments.

Roman architecture

The advanced craftsmanship of Roman architecture is evident in the Pompeii ruins. You can see opulent villas, theaters, public baths with pools for varying temperatures, and much more as you explore.

Theaters of antiquity

Imagine witnessing a gladiator battle at the Pompeii Spectacula, which predates the Colosseum by over a century. This amphitheater offers a lens into the leisure activities of Pompeians.

Frescoes and mosaics

The walls of Pompeii’s buildings display vibrant frescoes and intricate mosaics which point not just to the artistic prowess of ancient Romans but also the economic status and artistic patronage of wealthy Pompeians.

Lessons in history

History comes alive at Pompeii. You are bound to gain a deeper understanding of history, archeology, and geology. You might also find yourself pondering over the power and unpredictability of nature which wiped out an entire city.

Great exciting day with lovely stops for the limoncello factory and later on lunch with a fantastic view. Pompeii was anything short of spectacular! Our guide at Pompeii was fabulous and entertaining explaining all the ruins in detail. Smooth ride to and from. Only comment is the limoncello factory was waaaay overpriced for the items offered.

The punctuality, efficiency, and friendliness of the entire team at every site we visited—we got in super fast with no waiting. As soon as we arrived, they gave us our tickets and told us how much time we had (which was plenty). I highly recommend the full tour of the three areas. I think it’s a great investment to see a significant part of Naples; they give you enough time to see absolutely everything and even to buy souvenirs. The vehicles are well-equipped and in good condition—highly recommended from Madrid!!🇪🇸
