I really recommend taking a guide (3 hrs) to visit Pompeii. It saves a huge amount of time, lets you skip the line at the entrance, keeps you from getting lost in all the streets, and takes you straight to the essentials so you can be sure to see the highlights, leaving you free to wander around afterward and continue exploring the city at your own pace. The details and anecdotes shared by the guide are very interesting, and it keeps you from doing the visit with your nose buried in books or paper travel guides.

Paolo (or maybe spelt Paulo) our guide was knowledgeable and genuinely interested in Pompeii, which made it much more enjoyable for us. The audio earpiece made it easy to hear even if we got a little behind or was near the back of the line. He had time for questions and ensured we got the most from our tour, even recommending other parts we should visit that we didn't have the time for in the 2 hours.

Dr. Grazia was wonderful at bringing the history of Pompeii to life. With her, I experienced a typical Pompeian day. Our guide Antonella is an archaeologist and clearly passionate about Pompeii, sharing insights and information and bringing the whole experience alive. One of the best parts was walking round the raised platform and looking down into homes and businesses. The photo shows a very early 'takeaway' shop which amused us.
