What to See at the Royal Palace of Caserta?
What to See at the Royal Palace of Caserta?
The Royal Palace of Caserta is huge, to say the least. It’s easy to get lost while exploring it. So here are a few things to keep an eye out for.
The Grand Staircase of Honor
You will feel quite like a monarch yourself while you ascend the long parallel marble staircases of the Royal Palace of Caserta. Thirty-five meters high, the grey marble chiseled to perfection, the staircase leads to a spacious arched vestibule and three majestic statues at the top. From there you can truly admire the aesthetic dimensions of the structure that has inspired the designs of grand staircases worldwide.
The English Garden
Cozied in the immense manicured lawns outside the palace is the English Garden, a landscape design wonder meant to take you on a journey of colors and scents. Designed by British gardener John Andrew Graefer, the garden is an ambient escape, encapsulating 25 hectares of rare plants, bamboo forests, and ponds. Also, check out the Crpytoporticus, a false ruin while you’re there.
Carolino Aqueduct
The Carolino Aqueduct was commissioned by Charles of Bourbon to supply the nearby settlements, mills, and agricultural lands with water. It was also used as a decadent water source for the lush gardens and unending cascades of the Palace grounds. Nevertheless, it was considered an important public work created by the Bourbon regime.
The Diana and Actaeon Fountain
At the bottom of the grand cascade is a depiction in marble of the greek tragedy of Actaeon. The pantheon of sculptures features a shocked Diana, the goddess of virginity, at the appearance of a man while she is bathing. Nearby we see a scene in which a terrified anthropomorphic stag is chased by frenzied dogs. The stag is really Actaeon, who was transformed by Diana for his intrusion.
The Grand Cascade
The undulating slope of the Royal Park’s vista has a waterfall at its helm, running down a forested mountainside that feeds into its rectilinear waterway of cascades and fountains. The waterway is lined by promenades and embellished with sculptures. Viewed from the end, the observer notes the scenographic beauty of the assemblage where the flowing water seems to originate from a point high up in the mountain.
