Pro tips to help you make a pick

Wear comfortable shoes. The gallery is extensive and you’ll want to explore every corner.

NGV offers free highlight tours every day (usually late morning and mid-afternoon). They’re the best way to navigate the vast collection without getting overwhelmed.

Arrive a few minutes early to enjoy the Waterwall. Kids love pressing their hands against it, and it’s a great photo spot before crowds build.

NGV International and NGV Australia are a 10-minute walk apart. Combine them for a full day: world art in the morning, Australian art in the afternoon.

The NGV Design Store is famous in Melbourne for creative gifts. Think art-inspired jewelry, design books, and limited-edition prints you won’t find elsewhere.

About National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria is one of Melbourne’s cultural cornerstones and a must-visit for anyone curious about art. From ancient artifacts to contemporary design, its collections trace creativity across continents and centuries. With headline-making exhibitions and a strong focus on Australia’s own artistic story, NGV stands out as the country’s most dynamic museum experience.

Did you know?

A large portion of NGV’s acquisitions come from the Felton Bequest (a bequest by Alfred Felton in 1904). Over the years, more than 15,000 works have been purchased through this fund.

The NGV International building is famously surrounded by a shallow moat and water features, part of a cohesive architectural vision to frame the gallery elegantly.

The recent Yayoi Kusama exhibition (2024–25) shattered NGV records: over 570,000 visitors, making it the most attended ticketed exhibition in NGV history and the highest attendance for a visual art show ever in Australia.

When Australia’s new National Gallery in Canberra was established, most state galleries dropped “National” from their names. NGV is the exception, officially retaining “National” in its name to this day.

The NGV is split across two sites: NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Center at Federation Square, which focuses on Australian art.

Coming together with friends who all enjoy fashion and style. The exhibition was well worth the flight from Brisbane to attend.

Fabulous exhibition, beautifully displayed, however it was hard to read the large informational material on the walls, when the letters were a similar colour to the background colour, made worse by the dim light at these areas. The visit was a present for my friend'S 77th birthday and she's also thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have a long and passionate interest in photography and I thought this era of 20th century photography would be both historical and important. It was both and I loved the many different subject matters, themes and the various materials and processes used to capture their images. I would thoroughly recommend this exhibition to anyway with a passing interest in the hisory of phototgraphy and photography as an art form
