As one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe, the National Palace of Queluz is a heritage site that you cannot miss on your visit to Portugal. A walk through the magnificent palace will take you back to a time of regal balls and stately dinners. Gasp at the lavish interiors of the Throne Room, where the royalty used to receive their guests. The entire room is decorated with gold carvings, ornate mirrors and large paintings, giving you a sneak-peek into how the Portuguese monarchy used to live back in the day. See also the Princess’s Apartments, the Ambassador’s Room and the Music Hall, which reflects the royal family’s interest in music.

After a tour inside the palace, explore the over 16 hectares of gardens outside the palace. Wander among ponds, fountains and statues inspired by classical mythology, the most famous of which is the Fountain of Neptune.

The National Palace and the Garden of Queluz are both located in Sintra, which is about 30 kilometers away from Lisbon
Get to Sintra by taking a train from Lisbon
The park and interiors of the palace are wheelchair accessible
You are welcome to take photographs. However, tripods, flash photography and selfie sticks may not be used
Apart from guide dogs, no other animals are allowed inside the attraction
Eating, smoking, and drinking are not allowed inside the palace and the garden
