The Quinta da Regaleira has truly fascinating corners, like the famous initiatory well and its network of tunnels, but the overall experience is greatly diminished by the tourist overcrowding. It's almost impossible to enjoy the mysticism or the peace of its gardens when you have to wait in monumental lines just to take a picture or to walk the paths. Furthermore, the lack of crowd control makes a place that should be magical become a stressful and uncomfortable space to visit.

It's really beautiful—the carvings and details in the decor are all very nice—but I found it a little repetitive, almost as if every space, or every room, so to speak, were the same.

Awesome to see all the detail work. If taking the bus #1253, please note it does no longer let you off near the palace. The stop directions tell you to take you will have to hike up the mountain for about an hour. Better to take bus into Sintra then take the shuttle loop to palace. But definitely go even under restoration it was cool to see and grounds are beautiful

What to bring

Comfortable footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes as the visit includes palace interiors and paths through the park, some of which can be steep.

For warmer days: Consider bringing water and a hat while exploring the outdoor areas.

Audio guide: If you've selected the audio guide option, download the audio app before arriving to avoid connectivity issues on-site.

Earphones: Carry your earphones for an immersive audio guide experience.

What's not allowed

Bringing your dog to restricted areas: Dogs are welcome in the Park of Monserrate, but they must stay on designated paths and out of areas marked as off-limits. Dogs must not disturb other visitors or animals.

Rules: Only one dog is allowed per visitor and must be kept on a non-extendable leash. Potentially dangerous breeds must be accompanied by someone over 16 and wear a muzzle and a leash no longer than one metre.

Accessibility

Parking: Two parking spaces are reserved for visitors with mobility restrictions.

Access inside the Palace: The Palace entrance and ground floor can be accessed via a ramp. However, the second floor and kitchen are not accessible to visitors with mobility restrictions.

Areas: Accessible toilets, as well as an accessible cafeteria and shop, are available.

Moving through the park: A recommended accessible route leads from the entrance towards the Palace, although some sections are steep and are best attempted with an assistant.

Reserve mobility equipment in advance: Manual folding wheelchairs and traction equipment are also available with advance reservation, subject to availability.

Guide dogs: Properly identified assistance dogs are allowed on site, and drinking bowls are available for them.

Guided tour: The guided option lasts 1.5 hours and is available in Portuguese or English, depending on the option selected.

Group size: Guided tours are limited to a maximum of 20 guests.
