Mleiha: Sounds of the Past Stone Tools Workshop at Archaeology Centre

Explore Mleiha Archaeological Centre with a guided, hands-on flint knapping workshop and field visit to the Valley of the Caves.

Getting started

Begin your 2-hour workshop by checking in at the Mleiha Archaeological Centre museum as part of your booked ticket. After your group is assembled, your guide outlines the plan for the session and any requirements for participants aged 5 and above. You then move into the first part of the program where the introduction sets the context for what you will see and do.

What to expect

Mleiha Archaeological Centre museum

This workshop starts inside the Mleiha Archaeological Centre museum, where you are introduced to the deep past of the region. The focus is on how early humans lived, the tools they used, and why Mleiha is significant for understanding prehistory.

Features

• Introduction to human prehistory is provided in a guided format, helping you understand how early humans adapted to their environment and how this desert landscape preserves traces of their lives.

• Introduction to Palaeolithic stone tool technologies explains how early stone tools were conceived and produced, giving you a framework for the practical flint knapping session later in the workshop.

• Entry to Mleiha Archaeological Centre museum is included with your ticket, so your group can use the museum environment to connect the displays with the live explanations you receive.

Valley of the Caves, Neolithic flint knapping site

Next, you travel as a group on a field visit to the Valley of the Caves, a Neolithic flint knapping site associated with tool-making activity. Time here is dedicated to seeing the landscape where stone tools were produced and trying the techniques for yourself.

Features

• A field visit to the Valley of the Caves lets you stand at a Neolithic flint knapping site, observing the terrain and context where stone tool technologies developed after the Palaeolithic period.

• A hands-on flint knapping demonstration shows you step by step how stone flakes can be detached and shaped, so you can see the principles from the museum introduction applied in practice.

• Depending on the option you select at booking, a 40% discount on 3 tickets is available with the Group Discount Workshop Ticket, making it easier for families or school groups to join this workshop together.

Wrapping up

Exclusive return transfers are not part of the standard ticket, so after the Valley of the Caves visit and hands-on flint knapping demonstration, you make your own onward arrangements from the Mleiha area once the group returns and the guided component concludes.
