Why Watch The Marriage of Figaro
Why Watch The Marriage of Figaro
Composed in 1786 by the legendary Mozart himself, The Marriage of Figaro has been performed in multiple styles, flavours, and settings over the centuries since its premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna. It is amongst the top 10 most frequently performed operas across the world. This complex narrative has entertained audiences with its psychological themes, unmatched music, and beautifully developed characters. This version of The Marriage of Figaro is directed by the accomplished Joe Hill-Gibbins. It will feature company favourites such as Andrew Shore and Susan Bickley alongside debutant Božidar Smiljanić as Figaro.
The Story
The Marriage of Figaro is set in the estate of Count Almaviva, three leagues outside the Spanish city of Seville. Being a continuation of The Barber of Seville, many of the characters from the original story make a reappearance. Rosina is the countess, and her husband Count Almaviva has morphed from a romantic youth to a cunning womanizer who pays no attention to the needs of his wife. Figaro has fallen in love with the Countess’ maid Susanna, and the couple is planning to get married.
Unfortunately, Count Almaviva has other plans; he is attempting to exercise his right to bed a servant girl on the night of her wedding, and Figaro’s betrothed is now the object of his desire. As Susanna, the Countess, and Figaro conspire to teach the Count a lesson, chaos ensues in the most comical of ways. Count Almaviva is finally taught a tough lesson in marital etiquette as he is reunited with his own wife.
