About Moorish Castle

Castelo dos Mouros, whose remains can be seen from far above Sintra, was a formidable fortress that protected the whole area from the Moors during the eighth and twelfth centuries. Built on a steep rocky cliff, the fortress gave the Moors a commanding view of the shore and the countryside beyond. Today, the Moorish castle provides a welcome respite from Sintra's other tourist destinations, and it has preserved the serene atmosphere that so impressed King Ferdinand II.

Did you know?

The highest tower of the Moorish Castle-the Royal Tower is located towards the southwest of the castle.

The chapel that you see inside the castle was constructed using limestone and masonry.

Before the ‘Reconquista,’ the chapel functioned as a mosque.

You can see as far as the Atlantic Ocean from the Moorish Castle.

The Castle was constructed as a defensive and fortified structure. It was used to protect the surrounding areas and keep an eye on the maritime routes through which Lisbon could be accessed.

Why visit Moorish Castle?

Adventure and nature

If you're looking for adventure or just want to spend some time with nature, the Castelo dos Mouros is the place for you. Offering a thrilling quest among beautiful scenery, it has five turrets to explore and massive battlements that extend over 450 meters. The castle's picturesque location on a rugged ridge in the middle of old woodlands makes it an ideal destination for the lover of greens in you.

Combo ticket advantage

While the Moorish Castle stands as a remarkable tourist attraction, it shares the spotlight with the magnificent Palácio da Pena, just a stone's throw away. Overcrowding is a common problem at the Pena Palace, particularly during the summer, despite the fact that it is large and has many sights to behold. However, savvy visitors can opt for a combo ticket, securing priority access to both attractions, thus maximizing their experience while saving time and money

Streamlined exploration

The Moorish Castle is much easier to navigate than Pena Palace's labyrinth of chambers and passageways. While there are opportunities for exploration, including a climb to the highest point, the castle's layout ensures that visitors can fully appreciate its history and architecture without spending an excessive amount of time

Rich history and restoration

Extensive repair works began when King Ferdinand II acquired the Moorish Castle in 1838, and they continued until 1955, when it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The castle is a symbol of Portugal's cultural importance and historical legacy, including artefacts dating back more than 1000 years! Difficult to imagine, isn't it?

Curious inscription

On the way to the castle, tourists will see a chapel and a burial ground. Among the poignant plaques is one that reads, "What man has assembled only God can set apart." The quote implies that we cannot determine if the remains belong to a Christian or Muslim. Also, the fact that the Sintra Moorish Castle was reduced to rubble by nature made it an intriguing quotation.

Main Entrance (Eastern Wall)

Main Entrance (Eastern Wall)

This is the doorway that tourists use to enter the castle grounds. It's the most well-maintained and has easy access for visitors.

Secondary Entrance (Western Wall)

Secondary Entrance (Western Wall)

There's another opening on the western side of the castle walls. This used to be a postern gate, a smaller entrance used for specific purposes like bringing in supplies.

It was a wonderful visit, and everything went great. Even though we arrived late at the palace, they let us in. Thank you! It was a really great experience.

I enjoyed the tour of the Pena Palace and the various terraces because of the views they offer. The park is pleasant to walk through, although all the hills are tiring. Well-organized. Quinta da Regaleira: The palace and chapel are very beautiful on the outside, though there isn’t much to see inside. The most interesting thing to see was the Initiation Well. Very pleasant café.

We had a great time. We went on Wednesday, August 5, and our guide was Iván, a guy from Andalusia—really nice and very attentive, always looking out for the group. We laughed a lot with him, and he told us some really interesting stories the whole way. Honestly, we really enjoyed it. Say hi to the guy from “the Bilbao group.”

Out tour guide was amazing. Loved the detailed explanation and the places we visited. So worth it. The free times and food were perfect. We had just enough time to try the cuisine, the lemon-cinnamon cookies are so unbelieveable I have been trying to bake them. Our tour guide bought us those 'Long Pillows'. Not only that we also are now friends with our travel partners. It was such an opportunity to make new international friends. My parents don't know English and I had to translate for them. Our guide realised it and took breaks in between speeches for ne to translate properly. Overall; great tour with amazing timeline, vehicle, guide, people and places. Trustworthy website, happy customers. So glad we chose, so sure to choose again. Blessings <3

The place is charming, with mysterious paths and brimming with symbolism, art, history, architecture, and encounters. Its gardens exude a sense of tranquility. The tour takes about 1 or 2 hours if you’re a detail-oriented explorer (like me, haha)—maybe a little longer. The estate: It’s a must-see.

There were seven of us, ranging in age from 70 years to 38 months. We loved walking around this huge resort. We arrived at 4:00 p.m. and there were no lines. We were amazed by the well and the underground tunnel. Our children, ranging in age from 9 years to 38 months, said this was the highlight of their day. The towers were a big hit with my grandchildren. They loved having their pictures taken once they reached the top. One of our grandchildren suggested we check out the steps, which were different in one of the towers, and he was right—but the view was spectacular. Luckily, there was a cafeteria where we could refuel with water and snacks. The woodwork and stained-glass windows were magnificent.

Awesome to see all the detail work. If taking the bus #1253, please note it does no longer let you off near the palace. The stop directions tell you to take you will have to hike up the mountain for about an hour. Better to take bus into Sintra then take the shuttle loop to palace. But definitely go even under restoration it was cool to see and grounds are beautiful
