GroupVerified booking3 weeks ago5/5We really enjoyed our visit to the Château des Maures, mainly because of the exceptional views it offers of Sintra, the surrounding forest, and the Pena Palace. For those views alone, the climb is well worth the effort (not to be underestimated, though I believe there’s also a bus that can take you up). Don’t expect to visit a furnished or perfectly preserved castle: it consists primarily of ruins and medieval fortifications. However, the ramparts are remarkably well-preserved and allow you to walk through much of the site while enjoying spectacular views. If you want to see it all, plan for plenty of time and be prepared for a physical hike. We also appreciated the historical aspect of the site, founded during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and later restored in the 19th century under the impetus of King Ferdinand II, as part of the Romantic rediscovery of Portuguese heritage. The atmosphere is very pleasant, surrounded by nature, with numerous trails and green spaces. An ideal complement to a visit to the Pena Palace, offering a deeper understanding of Sintra’s history while enjoying magnificent scenery.HHenriett B
CoupleVerified booking2 weeks ago5/5Pena Palace is marvellous. We spent roughly two hours in the castle and the park. I love the details of the building, the tiles and other handmade beauties. Between Pena and Quinta we had some time and we decided to take the hiking route down to Sintra. It is doable but proper shoes are important! The route worth the effort: charismatic cliffs on the upper side followed by a botanical garden feeling. Quinta palace promises more than its real value. There is only a small exhibition in the palace, the garden is nice but less interesting after the park of Pena palace. All in all, a perfect day trip from Lisbon. Managable with combination of public transport and a taxi in Sintra from the railway station to Pena palace.AAlina R
GroupVerified bookingLast week5/5Palácio da Pena For me, the Palácio da Pena is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. The exterior is spectacular and the views are incredible, but the crowds can take away some of its charm. It’s worth seeing at least once for the unique atmosphere and for the photos. Quinta da Regaleira I found Quinta da Regaleira to be more special. It doesn’t impress with its grandeur, but with its mystery. The tunnels, gardens, and the Initiation Well give you the feeling that you’re uncovering a hidden secret. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. If I had to choose just one, I’d go back to Regaleira. Pena impressed me, but Regaleira enchanted me.FFrancoise S
CoupleVerified booking5 days ago5/5The Château des Maures, without a doubt! I went there right when it opened at 9:30 a.m. There was hardly anyone there. It was a long, steep, and tiring hike from Sintra, but well worth it for the view of the impressive citadel winding its way through a jumble of boulders, the surrounding panorama, and—from the top of the Royal Tower—the sight of the Pena Palace shrouded in mist. On the other hand, the Regaleira Palace disappointed me: the crowds, the noise...? A very 19th-century curiosity.IIffly A
GroupVerified booking2 weeks ago4/5We loved the Pena Palace. It was magnificent despite the fog and the cold in June. However, we couldn’t go to Quinta da Regaleira. The police had blocked the entrance. A tuk-tuk or private car costs €10 per person; there were four of us, so it would have been €80 for the round trip, which is outrageous. One of us has a disability, so it was impossible to walk up. Bottom line: we couldn’t take the tour even though we had tickets. Very disappointed.
