We really enjoyed our visit to the Château des Maures, mainly because of the exceptional views it offers of Sintra, the surrounding forest, and the Pena Palace. For those views alone, the climb is well worth the effort (not to be underestimated, though I believe there’s also a bus that can take you up). Don’t expect to visit a furnished or perfectly preserved castle: it consists primarily of ruins and medieval fortifications. However, the ramparts are remarkably well-preserved and allow you to walk through much of the site while enjoying spectacular views. If you want to see it all, plan for plenty of time and be prepared for a physical hike. We also appreciated the historical aspect of the site, founded during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and later restored in the 19th century under the impetus of King Ferdinand II, as part of the Romantic rediscovery of Portuguese heritage. The atmosphere is very pleasant, surrounded by nature, with numerous trails and green spaces. An ideal complement to a visit to the Pena Palace, offering a deeper understanding of Sintra’s history while enjoying magnificent scenery.
    • Looking for the best views of Sintra? Head up to the 10th-century Moorish Castle, where you can admire its sturdy walls, towers, and ramparts.

    • See relics dating back to the Bronze Age and enjoy some of the best views of Sintra and beyond, including the Atlantic Ocean, from atop.

    • Gain entry to Monserrate Palace which served as a summer residence for British royalty and aristocracy.

    • Wander through Portugal's lush botanical paradise, featuring picturesque grottos, and over 3,000 species of plants from various continents.

    • Fun fact: Monserrate Palace has served as a filming location for several movies such as "The House of the Spirits" (1993) and "The Ninth Gate" (1999).

Awesome to see all the detail work. If taking the bus #1253, please note it does no longer let you off near the palace. The stop directions tell you to take you will have to hike up the mountain for about an hour. Better to take bus into Sintra then take the shuttle loop to palace. But definitely go even under restoration it was cool to see and grounds are beautiful

The ruins provided amazing views around Lisbon and the surrounding areas. They are best enjoyed as part of a whole day out in Sintra, alongside many of the other attractions such as the palace.

I enjoyed this more than the Pena Castle. Awesome views and a lot of history. Bared this with as Quinta for a perfect afternoon.

It was really special to see the mix of greenery and refreshing plants throughout and the historic stone walls of the castle!

Getting in was no problem. Unfortunately, one of the palaces was completely covered in scaffolding, so there wasn't much for us to see. We only spent half an hour there instead of an hour, and buying tickets on-site would have been €8 cheaper per person. So, unfortunately, it was a bit of a rip-off.
