Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre was an absolutely powerful and immersive experience from start to finish. The atmosphere inside the theater felt intimate yet emotionally charged, which perfectly complemented the depth and heaviness of August Wilson’s storytelling. From the moment the lights dimmed, the audience was fully locked in. The performances were exceptional across the board. Each actor brought authenticity, emotion, and nuance to their role, making the characters feel incredibly real and layered. The chemistry among the cast made the boardinghouse setting feel alive...full of tension, humor, pain, resilience, and hope. This was an amazing Broadway experience. The staff was efficient with getting people into the theater and to their seats. Director, Debbie Allen walked through the theater speaking to and waving to the audience before taking her balcony seat. The cast was spectacular! They masterfully delivered Wilson's complex themes of post-slavery identification. Depicting that Freedom is more than physical liberation exploring the spiritual and psychological aspects as well as community and connections. I especially enjoyed the chemistry between Cedrick the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson. Ruben Santiago-Hudson Is a MASTER who astonishingly getting better with each project. The children in the cast were fabulous actors who had the audience wrapped around their little fingers.
