Why sunset at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is a vibe worth experiencing

Last Updated:

Watching the sunset from SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is one of the most striking ways to see New York City. You're not just standing at an observation deck. You're walking through a sensory experience that combines art, architecture, light, and space. As the sun lowers and the skyline begins to glow, the building itself becomes part of the show. Whether you're looking to explore, relax with a drink, or take some incredible photos, sunset is the best time to visit.

Summit One

Air by Kenzo Digital

This multi-room art installation starts with mirrored floors and walls in Transcendence, where sunset reflections create a surreal floating effect. Then Affinity adds silver spheres that bounce light and color. Unity finishes the sequence with a digital cloud display where your face appears briefly in the sky.

Levitation skyboxes

These are glass ledges that extend beyond the building. You can walk out, look down at Madison Avenue, and feel like you're standing in the air. The views during sunset are dramatic, especially as the sun reflects off nearby skyscrapers.

Ascent glass elevators

This is an optional upgrade but worth it for the view. The elevators climb the outside of the building and pause at a higher point. You’ll get a wide-open, sunset-facing view from above the main deck.

Après café and cocktails

At the top, you'll find Après, a Nordic-inspired café. It’s a good place to slow down, especially as the light fades. In the evening, they serve a few curated cocktails made for sipping with a view. Expect clean flavors and a calm atmosphere with seating near the western windows.

Spotting landmarks and playful moments

From SUMMIT, you’ll easily spot the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Central Park, and even the Statue of Liberty if visibility is good. The mirrored floors make it fun to explore different angles. You’ll notice people lying down to catch reflections or taking wide-angle shots using the glass surfaces.

Sunset views from the top

The sky shifts quickly here. You’ll see gold turning into pink, then deep blue. If it’s a clear day, you’ll see New Jersey, the Bronx, and even far-off hills at the horizon.

This is a great time for photography. Try different levels and reflections. You don’t need a tripod or pro gear. Your phone camera will work well, especially if you stay after sunset when the city lights start to rise. The contrast between the fading light and glowing buildings makes for striking shots.
