Highlights

Did you know?
  • The ‘Battle of the Kiss’: During World War II, most of the valuable artworks from the Belvedere collection, including Gustav Klimt's iconic painting ‘The Kiss,’ were evacuated to prevent them from being damaged or stolen by Nazi forces. This daring rescue mission, known as the ‘Battle of the Kiss,’ involved transporting the artworks to various hiding places throughout Austria.
  • Historic events: Over the centuries, the Belvedere Palace has been the setting for numerous diplomatic gatherings. It has hosted visits from emperors, kings, and other dignitaries, as well as lavish balls, receptions, and cultural celebrations. Today, the palace serves as a venue for prestigious events and exhibitions, maintaining its status as a cultural hub in Vienna.
  • Home to cultural institutions: The Belvedere Palace complex is home to several cultural institutions, including the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, which houses an extensive collection of Austrian art, ranging from medieval masterpieces to contemporary works. The palace also hosts concerts, lectures, and educational programs, further enriching Vienna's cultural landscape.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 2001, the Belvedere Palace complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding universal value as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and art. The inscription highlights the palace's significance as a symbol of artistic achievement and cultural heritage.
  • Commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy: Prince Eugene played a crucial role in the Habsburg Empire's military victories against the Ottoman Empire and France, and he used his wealth to commission the construction of the Belvedere as a lavish summer residence and showcase his art collection.

The Belvedere museum upper level is laid out very nicely, and it was easy to navigate around the museum. It was not too crowded, and I could enjoy every piece of art.

Breathtaking palace, especially externally, with manicured garden and spectacular views. The picture gallery is very interesting, with several collections divided by periods. The Klimt collection is very rich.

Man, woman, their relationship to each other, their different gender, runs through the entire exhibition and the life's work of RENATE BERTLMANN, performance artist with a political message, sympathetic, courageous woman. It is a pity, if not downright "unforgivable", that her MESSERROSENFELD of 2019 was neither exhibited in the Austria - Pavilion of the BIENNALE ARTE DI VENEZIA nor even found any mention, neither textual nor pictorial. Nothing ! This is inexplicable. Also the ticket - and guide - staff was totally uninformed in this matter ? How, Where, What, Why ?

it was very easy to buy my tickets on headout! i highly recommend it, since you can have your tickets from your cell phone and anticipate your purchase. My only recommendation would be to research well what exhibitions you want to see and in which area of the Belvedere is located (lower or upper belvedere), as I bought tickets for lower belvedere but the exhibition I wanted to see was in upper belvedere.

There was a person who always communicated with us in Spanish, facilitating the experience, also realizing that I was with a disabled person, not only provided me with a wheelchair, but also got us a space in the first possible visit so that we did not wait, that is, they are people with great sensitivity and very attentive to the tourist.
