Pro tips to help you make a pick

Use the donation-based entry if you only want the main church interior. Pay separately only for extras such as the dome terrace, treasury access, guided tours, or organ concerts.

About St Stephen's Basilica

The preserved right hand of King Saint Stephen and a 360° terrace around the cupola make St Stephen's Basilica more than a church stop. The main interior is free to enter, while the dome adds a city-view experience reached by elevator and spiral stairs. Its mix of active worship, national relic, and panorama distinguishes it from Budapest's purely scenic viewpoints.

Did you know?

Construction started in 1851, but the basilica was only consecrated in 1905 because the first dome collapsed in 1868 and had to be rebuilt.

Why visit St Stephen's Basilica?

360° Views from the Dome Terrace

The paid panorama terrace circles the cupola and opens onto 360° views across Budapest. From the top, you can look toward Parliament, the Danube, Buda Castle Hill, and the Pest skyline; access is via elevator and/or spiral stairs, and visibility depends heavily on weather.

Plan your visit

Main Front Entrance (Façade Doors on Szent István tér)

This is the main public entrance for nearly all visitors, reached by climbing the central staircase facing Szent István tér. Use it for access to the nave, chapels, and general interior visit. During busier periods, staff may carry out bag checks or visual inspections at the door, and a short line can form on the steps; visitor reports suggest it usually keeps moving unless a service is starting or ending. The front approach has stairs, and while some visitors mention alternative side access, detailed official step-free routing is not clearly published.

Internal Access Points to Dome/Terrace

Visitors going up to the dome terrace follow signposted internal access points within the basilica complex, where the panorama/dome ticket booth and ticket check are located near the elevator and stairs. This is the right route for buying on-site dome tickets or validating them before ascent. Expect a second queue here: one for ticket purchase or verification, and another possible wait at the lift and narrow stair sections, especially around midday in high season. An elevator covers part of the ascent, but significant stairs remain, so the dome route is not fully wheelchair accessible.
