For some reason I’ve never got around to seeing Les Misérables before, but I’m very glad I put that right tonight … Wow! What an experience! The music is breathtaking, the performances are powerful, and the story hits you right in the heart. I’d heard nothing but glowing praise from my family. I'm happy to report that on this occasion it not only managed to live up to all that hype, but actually exceeded my high expectations.

Les Misérables in London was absolutely extraordinary. I loved every moment. The cast delivered breathtaking vocals, the orchestra was rich and immersive, and the staging made the story feel more alive than ever. It was emotional in all the right ways—goosebumps, tears, and pure awe. A truly outstanding production that stays with you long after the final note.

For many years I had wanted to see this show, as this is my favourite musical. I had very high expectations, and this show managed to surpass them. The production was beautiful and the actors were amazing. The story is very moving, I was in tears by the end. If I ever come back to London I will definitely be seeing this show again.

    The story

Set in 19th-century France, Les Misérables follows ex-convict Jean Valjean, released after years in prison but forever branded by his past. I saw Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre in London on 27 December with a brother. London performances really are hard to beat. I first saw the production in Manchester in the late 1990s and, over the years, have also watched the televised musical. I had read Victor Hugo’s novel in English translation and seen both the Jordan and more recent film adaptations. For my brother, the experience was quieter but deeply rooted in memory: our parent’s emotional response to a West End performance in 1986. When a new production opened in the West End, another brother—through contacts—secured tickets as a wedding anniversary gift for our parents. Our dad, left to himself, would probably have chosen a dependable “oldie but goodie,” wary of being disappointed. At that point, he asked, “Have you heard of some French musical?”—prompting the reply, “Is it Les Mis? If so, give me your ticket—I’ll go in your place.” He was reassured, and glad of it. For weeks afterwards he would dive for the radio, turning the volume up whenever one of the show’s songs was played. This time, I went in remembrance. The Jean Valjean performance—similar in tone to Colm Wilkinson—could not have ended more perfectly.

A wonderful performance on January 5, 2026. Impressive singing and performance. Afterwards, I bought two souvenir booklets, one small and one large. It's a shame that there are no photos of all the performers from that evening. There is only one photo of one person from that evening.
