We enjoyed the Tower. We found the bridge, and movement of the earthquake, and the view interesting. It was not crowded. The monastery was awful, truly awful. 1-3/4 hours in line in direct sun. Tickets must be TIMED. This is essential. Matter of time before dies on the line.

The tickets were billed as beating the queues which they didn't. At both sites (which were excellent) I would have been better buying the tickets on the day as there was no waiting at the ticket office. All I ended up doing was spending more on paying a service charge

The place is very nice to visit, unfortunately endless lines to be made under the sun, despite buying tickets online. It would be necessary to make the entrances by time slots.

Both locations were over crowded. The line for the monastery as at least an hour wait. It was blazing hot so we didn't wait around. We were with my 93 year old Mom who uses a walker. No accommodation for handicapped access. The initial wait at the Tower of Belem was not too bad. However once inside the wait for the upper tower was very long, again in the hot sun. Use some type of timed entry or don't sell as many tickets. Something with a 2 hour entry window would be good.

Your English and Spanish-speaking guide will walk you through the history of the monument for over 1.5 hours. The tower has 5 levels connected by a spiral staircase. These stairs are so narrow that they’ve installed a traffic signal set up to go up and down the stairs! Visit the octagonal Governor's Chamber and then make your way to the King’s room which overlooks the southern side of the tower. Another interesting element in this room is the eight holes in the floor called 'machicolations', through which the garrison could shoot or drop projectiles to fend off attacks.

Get stunning views of the Tagus Estuary and riverbanks from the terrace. Looking northward, catch sight of the secluded Chapel of St. Jerome among the trees on Avenida da Liberdade.
