We took a guided tour of Castel St Angelo with only 6 people in the group. The Castel itself is steeped in history spanning 2000 years of varying use, and is a fascinating place to visit. The guide that took us around was SUPERB!! Very knowledgeable and very interesting. She also spent more time with us than was planned which was kind of her. (I'm only sorry I can't remember her name. Leopard patterned baseball cap in theirs 30s. You know who you are!) Fantastic.

The Express Guided Tour, which I chose to go with, is an excellent choice for someone who doesn't have the time for the full one. I felt like I got the most important bits of history and information about the place, plus after the tour, I was free to remain there however long I wanted with the official paper map of the place with all available rooms to visit shown on it, so I could just walk and speed through those room if I wanted (which I did). Of course, access to the terrace was also free to enter for me. The tour guide (Alec, like "Baldwin") was easy to find, professional, well-prepared and knowledgable, and just a proper lad. Thanks for the tour.

Exhaustive tour of Castel Sant'Angelo thanks to a more than perfect Guide named Martina, who was very professional, kind and friendly. We were very well and comfortable, being able to take an excursus of the main stages of Roman history, focusing on the phases that most influenced Castel Sant'Angelo. So overall the visit was very much to our liking, but if possible I would recommend including a visit to the Passetto so we can have a more complete experience.

  • Bypass ticket queue and enter the museum at your selected time. With a guide leading you through, you can explore the castle’s key spots in a short time while uncovering its rich history.

    Getting started

Head to the main entrance at Lungotevere Castello 50 and present your ticket at the counter. Once checked in, you’re free to start exploring.

    What to expect

Beginning your visit at the spiral ramp, your guide would share insights into its usage as a means to transport cremated remains and later soldiers to the upper floors.

    Papal residence and prisons

The mausoleum turned into a papal residence under the influence of Pope Nicholas III making it into a safe retreat for popes. As you enter the papal apartments, you can see the frescoed adorned ceilings by Renaissance artists such as Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta. Moving through the Court of Alexander VI, you can stroll through the prisons of the fortress. Some instruments of torturing the prisoners are still preserved here.

    Terrace and Archangel Michael's statue

Your visit culminates at the terrace offering a scenic view of Rome along with the view of Archangel Michael’s famous statue by Peter Anton von Verschaffelt.
