We visited as a family of three, including our 5-year-old daughter, and the Oceanário de Lisboa completely exceeded our expectations. The guided tour made all the difference — our guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and had a real knack for explaining the marine life in a way that kept our little one fascinated the entire time. She was especially captivated by the otters and the massive central tank full of sharks, rays, and schools of fish swimming together. I’ve visited quite a few aquariums over the years, but this one is on a completely different level. From the moment you step inside, the outside world seems to disappear. Instead of rushing from one exhibit to another, you naturally slow down and find yourself standing in front of the enormous central tank, completely mesmerized. I must have spent more time there than I planned—and I didn’t regret a single minute. What makes this place special isn’t just the impressive collection of marine life. It’s the feeling it creates. Peaceful, fascinating, and surprisingly emotional. You leave with a greater appreciation for our oceans and everything that lives beneath the surface. I visited the Oceanário with my family recently, and it left a lasting impression on all of us. It’s not just a beautiful place to see incredible marine life, it’s genuinely healing. If you're looking to escape Lisbon's hot afternoon sun, the Oceanário de Lisboa is the perfect place to spend a few hours. I first visited when it opened in 1998, and after all these years, it's still just as impressive. The exhibits are beautifully maintained and offer a fascinating glimpse into the underwater world. The massive central aquarium is the highlight. Every viewing window offers a completely different perspective, revealing new species and scenes each time you stop to look. What an amazing place! I loved the numerous viewing platforms for the primary exhibit so that there was no overcrowding and so that I could see the exhibit from different levels and perspectives. The information cards on the walls were simple to read but extremely informative and in numerous languages! The route through the aquarium was well labelled with arrows and lights and useful to see every display. This was an amazing visit. Highly recommend!

I liked everything; the aquarium’s setting was very beautiful and recreated the animals’ natural habitats. I saw some animals I’d seen before. What I liked most was how playful and sociable the otters were. I also got to observe how fascinating animal evolution is, as in the case of the seahorses. It’s incredible how animals get used to living together across different species.

An incredible experience! The Lisbon Aquarium is truly magnificent and very well maintained. The different exhibits are immersive, the animals are impressive, and the large central tank is fascinating. You can easily spend several hours there without getting bored. Opened in 1998, the Oceanário de Lisboa is one of the world’s largest aquariums, renowned for its central 5-million-liter saltwater tank and immersive design that simulates a single, continuous ocean.

Features

Central saltwater tank: With over 5 million litres of saltwater, this vast tank houses diverse marine life and creates the illusion of one interconnected ocean, making it a focal point for visitors. Made of acrylic, it curves overhead, enveloping you in blue paradise.

Global marine habitats: Explore detailed recreations of the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean, each home to unique species and ecosystems.

Forests Underwater exhibit: Designed by Takashi Amano, this display highlights the biodiversity of tropical forest ecosystems within an aquatic setting.

Submerged Universe exhibition: Available until January 7, 2026, this temporary exhibit offers a fresh perspective on underwater worlds.
