Did you know?

The Queen's House, nestled in the gardens, was rumoured to be haunted by Marie Antoinette's ghost, with sightings of her spectral apparitions wandering the premises.

Versailles nurtured a musical heritage as acclaimed composers like Jean-Baptiste Lully and Christoph Willibald Gluck crafted timeless masterpieces, contributing to an unparalleled musical legacy.

During the winter season, the vast Grand Canal at Versailles transformed into an enchanting ice-skating rink, providing the royal court with the exhilaration of gliding across frozen waters.

In the 17th century, Versailles' gates, sculptures, and interiors shimmered with over 1,000 kilograms of gold leaf, symbolizing the opulent grandeur synonymous with the French monarchy.

Concealed within the palace, a clandestine library held over 4,000 precious books, offering a secluded sanctuary for intellectual pursuits and moments of serene contemplation.

Experience Versaille with Dex

The Versaille Dex experience is an interactive self-guided tour available exclusively with selected Versaille admission tickets booked through Headout.

Put on your earphones and follow a story that unfolds across the palace, the gardens, and the Trianon estate, connecting the Hall of Mirrors and the State Apartments with the groves, fountains, and quieter buildings spread across the park.

Historical and fictional characters lead you through stories of Louis XIV turning a hunting lodge into the seat of government; the court that lived by the king’s daily routine; the Hall of Mirrors and the treaty signed there; Marie-Antoinette’s Petit Trianon and the hamlet she had built; and Le Nôtre’s gardens and the machinery that fed the fountains, accompanied by original music and immersive sound design.

How Dex guides you through the estate

  • Dex uses your phone’s location to guide you along a recommended route covering the Royal Chapel, the King’s Grand Apartment, the Hall of Mirrors, the Queen’s bedchamber, the gardens and Latona and Apollo fountains, the Grand Canal, and the Trianon estate.
  • As you reach each location, it automatically begins the story connected to what you are seeing.
  • The route is only the starting point. When a room, a statue, or a fountain catches your attention, pause and ask your Dex guide a question.
  • Photograph a supported room, sculpture, or garden feature to uncover more about it, open a related story, or return to the route when you are ready.
  • Dex also points you towards recommended viewpoints, photo spots, groves, and paths in the gardens that most visitors never walk. You decide when to pause, where to go deeper, and when to continue.

How Dex differs from an audio guide and a group tour

An audio guide gives you a collection of prepared recordings. Dex builds those stories into a location-aware route, automatically connects them to what is around you, and lets you ask questions or investigate supported objects along the way.

A group tour gives you live interpretation from a human guide while following a scheduled departure, shared route, and group pace.

Dex offers a different experience: a structured tour that you can begin when you choose, pause whenever something interests you and explore at your own pace. Choose Dex if you want the direction and storytelling of a guided visit with the freedom to explore the estate independently.

Unlock Versaille Dex

Selected Versaille admission tickets booked through Headout unlock the complete Versaille Dex experience at no additional cost. It is not available as a standalone purchase or with tickets bought elsewhere.
