About Royal Collections Gallery
Explore Madrid's Royal Collections Gallery, an art museum located near the Royal Palace. Designed by acclaimed architects Luis Mansilla and Emilio Tuñón, the 40,000-square-meter complex holds a rich collection of Spanish artistry, featuring masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya, and Titian.
The construction of the gallery began in December 2006 and was completed in December 2015. The building encompasses over 40,000 square meters, with 8,000 square meters designated for public use. Its three exhibition rooms are spacious, open-plan areas spanning 103 meters in length and 16 meters in width.
The building has received numerous architectural awards, including the COAM Prize (2016), FAD architecture award (2017), and the American Architecture Prize (2017).
The Gallery serves as the primary platform for promoting cultural activities managed by Patrimonio Nacional, showcasing not only the Royal Collections but also highlighting the cultural richness of all Royal Sites.
The idea of constructing a museum to house the Crown's heritage collections dates back to the Second Republic in Spain, with the decree establishing the Museum of Arms and Tapestries. The project gained momentum in 1998 when the government committee approved the construction of the Gallery.
Beyond its role as an exhibition space, the gallery prioritizes the conservation and preservation of cultural assets. It has specialized facilities for the management and conservation of artworks, ensuring their longevity and accessibility for future generations.
