Midtown Manhattan's skyline looks like a free-for-all, but almost every famous shape in it answers a rule: setbacks written in 1916, a glass slab that used a loophole, a granite plaza the city liked so much it wrote it into law, and towers built on height bought from the neighbours.
Start a block from the Empire State Building, where the steps and the airship mast come into view. Visit the marble Morgan Library and the Public Library's lions, then follow the buried railroad from Grand Central up Park Avenue. See the Chrysler Building's secret spire, Lever House and the Seagram Building facing each other, St Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center and Radio City, and finish among the pencil-thin towers of 57th Street, a few minutes from Central Park.
Twelve stops, about 3.8 km and 2 hours, in English and at your own pace. Observation decks and museum entry are not included.
