The thing I liked most was the guide, Gennaro. Really great; he knew he didn't have much time and managed the group dynamics as best as possible having only two hours. Professional, mild-mannered, competent, polite, with a calm voice, obviously excellent English, and occasionally cracked a nice joke to make the tour more enjoyable (and he succeeded). Well done, Gennaro, I told you in person and I confirm it in writing. A few areas for improvement, which I don't think are down to Gennaro: 1) Punctuality: foreigners aren't as used to delays as we Italians are. 2) Preparing the headphones in advance by the support staff: since you recommend arriving 15 minutes early, your two staff members could start checking that the headphones work. 3) Sharing the tour itinerary in advance: it would be nice to know from the start which spots will be visited on the tour, perhaps marking the route and stops on the map you hand out, and as an added value, pointing out which places visitors could explore on their own depending on how much time they have left. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with everything; I work in another field but I teach as well, and I know there's always room for improvement, so I'm just taking the liberty of sharing minor areas to improve. So well done guys, wonderful tour, it stayed close to my heart, and above all, hats off to Gennaro!

I highly recommend visiting Pompeii with a guide, as the city is very large and you risk missing the highlights. Our tour was led by the archaeologist Teresa, who gave us two unforgettable hours through the streets of the city, sharing every possible historical detail and conveying all her enthusiasm!

The tour group was easy to find at the park's gate and the tour was interesting, revealing a lot of details that would not have been obvious from the brochure and interpration signs. At the conclusion of the tour we were encouraged to explore further on our own, which we did. We found several locations with truly well-preserved frescos that were not included in the tour. We wish that our guide wouild have included those locations in the tour, as, again, the past comes alive and you learn much more with a guide.

You get good info from Head out, but in the beginning it was quite a search to find where we could go with our tickets. We couldn't enter the site straight from the train together with the other visitors; we still had to walk 1.5 km to a kind of tourist office to get our final tickets there (we had already queued up in the regular line with our Head out tickets first). Rather than the audio guide, it's better to buy a paper guide right there in this shop that creates a route based on the time you have; it costs 10 € and is available in Dutch. Because the audio guide doesn't guide you around; when you reach a specific number, you have to look it up and listen (Dutch is not available). We took the 2-hour route ourselves; if you do that, you'll miss the famous bodies you expect to see, so check the map first to see where you can see them and add that to your route. All in all, a positive experience, though a bit of a search at first (but it is actually indicated in your booking info).

Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The fact that she is an archaeologist working in the site was exciting and it added to the experience. The tour had s good flow to it, she both explained a lot and let us explore for ourselves. I wish it was longer!

An incredible archaeological site and really well managed. Short queues, great facilities, clear signposting and plenty of useful information throughout. Everything was so well organised. A fantastic cultural day out – couldn't fault it!

What to bring

Carry your earphones for an immersive audio guide experience. If you are given a physical audio guide, ensure you arrive prepared with wired earphones (3.5mm jack).

A moderate amount of walking is involved in this activity. Please wear comfortable shoes due to uneven terrain.

What's not allowed

Strict dress code: No discourteous clothing or shirtless attire is allowed inside Pompeii Archaeological Park.

Big dogs (above the weight 10kg and the height of 40cm) are not allowed into the venue. Guide dogs with the proper certification are welcome.

Accessibility

Pompeii has uneven ground and limited wheelchair access. Use the south-side entrances instead of the main one.

Choose safety and comfort: This experience is not the best fit for people with impaired mobility and cardiac issues.

Tickets to the ruins are free of charge for disabled people and a companion, to be purchased directly on-site.

Additional information

Facilities: cloakroom, luggage storage. Head to the Superiore Entrance to make use of the onsite luggage facilities.

The fee for the excavation sites of Pompeii is free for all first Sundays of the month.

Children under 18 enjoy free entry with a valid ID.
