    Getting started

    Arrive at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Federation Square, Melbourne. Present your entry ticket at the main entrance, where staff will guide you through security and ticket validation. Once inside, you’re free to explore the permanent collection and featured exhibitions at your own pace.

    What to expect

    Founded in 1861, the NGV is Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum, housing a vast collection that spans centuries and continents. The gallery’s two main buildings, NGV International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, showcase art from First Nations, Australian, and international artists.

    Features

    • Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® 2025: French Impressionism: View more than 100 paintings by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, Manet, Cassatt, Morisot, Signac, and Sisley. The exhibition, developed with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, explores Impressionism’s evolution through ten thematic sections and original artist writings.

    • Permanent collection: Access over 75,000 works, including European masterpieces by Rembrandt, van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso, as well as significant Asian art, contemporary pieces, and First Nations works.

    • Free exhibitions: Enjoy complimentary entry to Escher X nendo | A House for Escher (until August 24, 2025), Lee Bul Untitled (until August 2025), and Another other: The Photo-Politics of Gary Lee Artist Room (until September 7, 2025).

    • Asian collection: Discover Chinese ceramics, Japanese woodblock prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige, and Indian sculptures, reflecting the diversity of Asian artistic traditions.

    • Contemporary art: Explore installations, photography, and multimedia works by established and emerging artists, highlighting NGV’s commitment to current artistic practices.

    • Free guided tours: You can attend free guided tours for this exhibition, as well as other artworks that are included in the general collection. These tours are led by NGV volunteer guides.

    Note: Admission fees apply to some exhibitions. Meals, refreshments, and transportation are not included.

  • What to bring

    • Bring a valid photo ID to match the name on your booking if requested at the entrance.

    • Consider bringing a water bottle; refill stations are available on site.

    • Dress comfortably for walking and standing, as you may spend several hours exploring the galleries.

    What’s not allowed

    • Large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage are not allowed inside the gallery for security reasons.

    • Food and beverages are not permitted in the exhibition spaces.

    • Pets are not permitted, except for registered service animals.

    • Flash photography, tripods, and filming equipment are not allowed inside the exhibition spaces.

    • Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes are strictly prohibited within the gallery premises.

    Accessibility

    • The National Gallery of Victoria is wheelchair accessible, with ramps and elevators available throughout the building.

    • Accessible restrooms are available on site.

    • Assistance is available for visitors with mobility needs; please approach staff for support.

    Additional information

    • Your ticket includes access to the NGV’s permanent collection and free exhibitions; some special exhibitions may require an additional admission fee.

    • Children can enter for free, but adults and concession holders may need to pay for certain exhibitions.

    • The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and closed on Mondays.

    • The NGV is located in Federation Square and is easily accessible by public transport.

    • Meals and refreshments are not included in your ticket; on-site cafes are available for purchase.

    • The gallery can be busy during weekends and public holidays; consider visiting on weekdays for a quieter experience.
