We traveled from San Antonio, Texas to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary, and visiting Pena Palace was, without question, one of the highlights of our entire trip. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed by the breathtaking views, the vibrant architecture, and the incredible craftsmanship that makes this palace so unique. Every room, terrace, and detail felt like stepping into a fairytale. The walk up to the palace was an experience in itself. The beautiful pathways winding through the lush forest created a peaceful atmosphere and made the journey just as memorable as the destination. We also chose the audio-guided tour, and it was absolutely worth it. The narration brought the palace's history to life and gave us a much deeper appreciation for its architecture, art, and cultural significance. My wife was completely blown away, which made our anniversary even more special. If you're visiting Portugal, this is one attraction you simply cannot miss. I recommend arriving early, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and taking your time to explore every corner. The views alone are unforgettable, and the entire experience exceeded every expectation. Visiting the Pena Palace and Park, as well as the Quinta da Regaleira, was one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. The Pena Palace is impressive even from a distance, with its vibrant colors and extraordinary architecture. From the top, you have a beautiful view of Sintra and the surrounding area. The adjoining park is very large, well-maintained, and perfect for leisurely walks through nature. We were particularly captivated by the mysterious atmosphere of the Quinta da Regaleira. The underground tunnels, hidden paths, and the famous Initiation Fountain make this place truly unique. There are interesting details to discover everywhere, making you feel almost as if you’re in a fairy tale. Both attractions are definitely worth seeing and offer a great blend of history, architecture, and nature. Anyone visiting Sintra should definitely not miss these places.

To say that Pena Palace & the Moorish Castle are amazing is not hyperbolic. They'll take your breath away (perhaps literally)! If you are in shape, you can easily manage to see both in a single outing. You must have a ticket for both. Just be aware that while you can enter the Moorish site anytime they're open, you will have a specific entry time for Pena. Tickets are non-refundable & cannot be changed. I recommend you buy all three tickets (both plus bus) in advance to ensure you don't spend a lot of time waiting. You can walk from one entrance to the other. Be prepared for a lot of steep walking at both sites. Wear sneakers. Heels, slip-ons, & flip-flops are not safe footwear. If you wear sandals, choose a rugged style. There are neither handrails nor guard rails at either historic place. All that said, both sites are definitely worth the effort!

Palácio da Pena For me, the Palácio da Pena is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. The exterior is spectacular and the views are incredible, but the crowds can take away some of its charm. It’s worth seeing at least once for the unique atmosphere and for the photos. Quinta da Regaleira I found Quinta da Regaleira to be more special. It doesn’t impress with its grandeur, but with its mystery. The tunnels, gardens, and the Initiation Well give you the feeling that you’re uncovering a hidden secret. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. If I had to choose just one, I’d go back to Regaleira. Pena impressed me, but Regaleira enchanted me.

Smooth entry eventhough we ran 30 mins late, not many people there, it felt very special and omg the palace is stunning, out of a fairy tale. Everyone was efficient and friendly. We walked through the park to the palace de contessa, beautiful! And the trees inside the park are magnificent! All in all a wonderful experience!

Pena Palace is an amazing sight to explore. The palace is perched high on a hill, and the views are outstanding. The package gave us transfers between the gardens and the palace which was great given the steep walk between the external bus dropoff and the palace

What to bring

Please wear comfortable walking shoes as you'll have to do a considerable amount of walking.

Make sure to bring refillable water bottles to refuel.

Your furry friends are unfortunately not allowed (except guide dogs).

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the palace.

Avoid bringing large bags or luggage.

Shutter bugs take note, tripods and drones are prohibited here.

Accessibility

Guide dogs are permitted.

Wheelchair access is available in certain areas; however, some parts of the Palace and park may be challenging due to uneven terrain and stairs.

The attraction may be crowded, so expect some waiting time, especially at the security checkpoint (15–20 minutes).
