We traveled from San Antonio, Texas to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary, and visiting Pena Palace was, without question, one of the highlights of our entire trip. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed by the breathtaking views, the vibrant architecture, and the incredible craftsmanship that makes this palace so unique. Every room, terrace, and detail felt like stepping into a fairytale. The walk up to the palace was an experience in itself. The beautiful pathways winding through the lush forest created a peaceful atmosphere and made the journey just as memorable as the destination. We also chose the audio-guided tour, and it was absolutely worth it. The narration brought the palace's history to life and gave us a much deeper appreciation for its architecture, art, and cultural significance. My wife was completely blown away, which made our anniversary even more special. If you're visiting Portugal, this is one attraction you simply cannot miss. I recommend arriving early, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and taking your time to explore every corner. The views alone are unforgettable, and the entire experience exceeded every expectation. Five stars without hesitation!

Directions / information was insufficient, very much under-informed. Getting to Sintra on its own has very much confising information (metro tickets valid or not, daily Lisbon card good or not). Once in Sintra, it is said, 30 minutes needed to get to Pena castle, which is an understatement. The local bus up the hill is a complete rip off. It was impossible initially to reach the local tour guide for being late, thankfully, the Pena castle staff did not charge us twice. The strict entry windows are a joke, the palace is way to overcrowded, even on a regular Tuesday morning, by noon, we have had 1 hour delay and 30 minutes of queues. Very bad experience in this regard. The castle itself was nice, the audio guide is good, still a great memory, but everything else felt like money drain and overcrowded. The park is way to big. Headout should state: this is a full-day program, and expect huge crowds even on a regular weekday, even early in the morning. I give kudos to customer service at Headout, I did reach out to them us being late as we had just missed the train at Rossio station, and their rep did reply, she was very polite and informative. There is no in-country phone number though.

Palácio da Pena For me, the Palácio da Pena is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. The exterior is spectacular and the views are incredible, but the crowds can take away some of its charm. It’s worth seeing at least once for the unique atmosphere and for the photos. Quinta da Regaleira I found Quinta da Regaleira to be more special. It doesn’t impress with its grandeur, but with its mystery. The tunnels, gardens, and the Initiation Well give you the feeling that you’re uncovering a hidden secret. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. If I had to choose just one, I’d go back to Regaleira. Pena impressed me, but Regaleira enchanted me.

We clearly did not anticipate the length of the queuing. Arriving at the main entrance at 30 minutes before our tour time, we assumed we had time, as we had pre-booked the shuttle. The queue for the shuttle put us back and we arrived at the second check point 5 minutes late. We were scanned in and joined the queue. We were very pleased when a steward pulled us from the line and took us up the queue and put us at the end of our assigned time tour.

We loved the Pena Palace. It was magnificent despite the fog and the cold in June. However, we couldn’t go to Quinta da Regaleira. The police had blocked the entrance. A tuk-tuk or private car costs €10 per person; there were four of us, so it would have been €80 for the round trip, which is outrageous. One of us has a disability, so it was impossible to walk up. Bottom line: we couldn’t take the tour even though we had tickets. Very disappointed.
